Just seen on twitter is 100 years since he died on the Somme RIP to a complete maverick, who i would have loved to have seen battering some of these modern centre forwards

Great little clip about him on bbc news, caused a riot when he turned up at the derby playing for vale, halfway through the game he took his vale top off to reveal a stoke top underneath.

Apparently the then stoke chairman ran into the pitch to appeal for calm and was laid out by stokes centre forward. Our ancestors didnt do things by half.

Leigh Roose was the reason for a major rule change before WW1 for goal keepers. Before this change keepers were allowed to carry the ball up to the half way line and release it into the opposition half. However there was always a gentlemens agreement that the release of the ball would be a gentle rolling to a team mate. Not Leigh, he had a very accurate and long throw and was able to launch the ball into the opposition penalty area for a considerable advantage. Opposition managers cried unfair and the rules were thus changed to confine the keeper to only handling in the penalty box. Sounds familiar.....remember Whinger trying something similar with Rory's long throw. His ability to throw long and accurately was to earn him the Military Medal in WW1. I have read the book "Lost in France". It's a great read for anybody interested in the early game and society of that era.

I might buy it and on Amazon it says best seller but I'm not sure, many books I have bought about sport, biographies etc... are usually disappointing.
