Especially at Spurs and West Ham. Last season Spurs average gate was 35k, they attracted 85k for their champs league match v Monaco! West ham av gate last season 35k this season its 57k last night attendance for the EFL game against Accrington was almost 40k !!! What's happening in the capital? do Spurs and West Ham really have such a huge following? Or is the increase all tourists?
These numbers have surprised me, the revenue generated from this huge potential will elevate West Ham way above anyone outside of the top 6 in terms of financial muscle. Is it just temporary? Any theories?

2 observations, no real empirical evidence for either:
Looking around Upton Park in recent seasons I would say West Ham have done a great job of attracting the East European community perhaps put off by high pricing and general pomposity at Arsenal and Chelsea.
It's easy to understimate the number of people who live in London, I am sure I read there are 5 or 6 London Boroughs larger than Stoke-on-Trent within spitting distance of Selhurt Park. It does show the potential of Crystal Palace and it actually makes their circa 24,000 gates look very ordinairy in the circumstances.

Spurs have always had a large fan base, but when White hart lane became all seater then there capacity was slashed so Pepole could not afford the price increases for the limited number of seats available,so the richer fans got the tickets.I don't know what the prices at Wembley were but I hope they were low so the old and young fans who cannot afford to watch Spurs in the Prem could go.

When I was working in East Ham the population was 90% Asian. Then just down the road at Hornchurch a complete oppersition very right wing.

If we expanded we would get around 500,000, even though stoke on Trent and the surrounding area is around 350,000, so why don't we get all these comers filled in, I mean no one has even mentioned it, sorry its been a long day

Both clubs have massive support Home and away West ham never regarded as big club but they have always had big support When it was announced west ham moving to Olympic stadium I said they would fill it but a hammers fan said they wouldnt Fantastic crowd there last night Liverpool had 2500 to 3000 under capacity in first game with extra tier Be interesting to see how many times they fill it

They're doing a deal for the champions league, 3 homes games for £70.

I think a population of 8,500,000 might have something to do with it.

West Ham are going to struggle to have any fans left if they keep fighting at the games, they'll all have banning orders by the end of the season.

Perhaps West Ham's numbers might tail off a bit when the novelty of the new stadium wears off.
Spurs were always ready for 60,000+ attendances

Massive and expanding population, lots of disposable income, football being fashionable in the middle classes, southern bias of the national media, overseas stars only wanting to live in the capital....the list goes on, frankly it would be amazing if a Premier League club based in the Smoke was not pulling in the numbers!

Which being as the population of SoT is only 350,000 that means a minimum of 150,000 Glory hunters... We'd need something 5 times the size of the Nou Camp, or 7 times bigger than OT...The traffic would be murder...If you build it they will come....

erm...isn't it quite simple????
Spurs avg. attendance was 35k....at a ground where the capacity was 36k
West Ham avg. attendance was 35k...at a ground where capacity was 35k
they both now have larger grounds to use, so more fans can actually go. am i missing something cos it seems fairly obvious really?

You have all missed the obvious answer. United are not playing well so their Southern supporters are going elsewhere..........

You have all missed the obvious answer. United are not playing well so their Southern supporters are going elsewhere.......... or they always had that many fans but most couldn't go as their grounds were too small? pretty sure that's kinda the reason West Ham got a bigger ground and the reason Spurs are building a bigger ground. they wouldn't both want bigger grounds if they didn't know beforehand there would be demand for tickets to actually fill them

Both Spurs and WHU have always had regular support bases which exceed the capacities of the old Boleyn and WHL and even pricing it out of the comfortable reach of the traditional working class bloke didn't stop those grounds being full every week.
I was always hopeful WHU would find enough extra support when we moved and 52000 season tickets sold (for two years) makes us 2nd behind Man U suggesting it was always out there. Some of those tickets have been bought by agencies I guess looking to bring tourists but a small proportion overall etc... but there is a big jump in youth season ticket support due to keener pricing (still more than Stoke btw) - but build/it convert it and they will come.
As for the stadium and the existing support issues with sit-down/stand-up, zero security, poor segregation, cinema ushers as stewards and run by a 3rd party - well the true test of this idea will get played out when we face Chelsea in the ELC. Bring your gum-shield me thinks.

Jermaine/Pwingy - There was another thread on here discussing the OS issues but in a nut-shell as follows:
1. Much of the lower tier support at the Boleyn after seating was installed used to stand whole match (they were allowed) and those supporters still want to stand at the new place. But with supporters all mixed up in one huge east side home stand (where most of the issues are) this clash of sit/stand viewing culture is causing friction and the odd fracas. Mixed up in this are of course families and kids that generally wouldn't want an "old days" experience.
The club have told ALL the support to sit ALL game - for two reasons - while the sit/stand stuff is going on they can't get the safety certificate to use all of the 60,000 capacity (currently limited to 57000 but will be 67000 next season). And it's against the law. Currently overall it's being ignored or protested against despite many fans been ejected, so they have offered migration within the stadium for those affected and supporter groups are in discussion with the club for safe standing - we'll see.
The problem is exacerbated by stewards completely out of their depth to manage a football crowd, most, have no affinity to the club and who's job description doesn't include re-educating thoroughly refreshed Essex lads on how they should watch football!!
The segregation issue is more concerning IMO. You can reach anywhere in the ground from point of entry (once you know the routes) and the security as things stand won't cope with a big firm from somewhere else deciding to create a headline. Additionally the old-bill's radios won't work in the stadium apparently so they're not policing inside either.
