It's a bit of an oxymoron for me cause I have never put butter on one, sometimes will dip one side in the dip(you know what I mean), but never butter. Down here they take the name literally & butter them up. On a slight tangent, there are people down here that not only have never had a chip buttie(Always $#!t loads of butter), but have not even heard of the concept!!! Can't believe this even been asked! Lots butter for me, can't beat it! Chip butties too, really simple but deeeelicious 😜

Agree with the emphasis on WHITE there Skank. The cheaper the better, a bacon butty ain't the same on granary, wholemeal, rye or any form of posh bread. Though I do love a bacon and cheeze croissant or two. Dripping with melted butter a must. Same "cheap, thin, white" rule also applies for the chip butty. However, butter is compulsory on this butty. Cup of tea is highly recommended too Recently been introduced to the marvel of a buttery mashed potato cheap white bread sarnie. Me nan always had a round of bread and butter with her tinned fruit afters. It disgusted me. Luckily I was usually in the other room with the telly turned up. Not really sure where I stand on banana sarnies. Get an urge now and then but meeehhh, generally wish I hadn;t bothered. Me Breville's broke so there's a bit of a butty crisis chez cheeez. Concentrating efforts on oatcakes.

you do need moisture on yr butty, especially a BLT, but for a just bacon sandwich there's a definite hierarchy imo:
dip cheese sauce any of the above available and I'm happy to eschew butter.
If there was only bread and bacon on offer I'd go out.

Anyway, I digress, it wasn't bad, a bit like cranberry with turkey. She was as mad as a box of frogs mind

No butter. Fry one side of the WHITE bread in the bacon fat. Use decent dry cure bacon cooked well. Agree with the emphasis on WHITE there Skank. The cheaper the better, a bacon butty ain't the same on granary, wholemeal, rye or any form of posh bread. Though I do love a bacon and cheeze croissant or two. Dripping with melted butter a must. Fresh mid-price sliced white factory bread is the best for a BS as far as I'm concerned. It's a treat for me nowadays as I'm otherwise strictly wholemeal. When I was little the grown ups used to eat brine bread and butter on a Sunday night with the tinned fruit and evap. I never took to that. Some of the kids at school used to have sugar butties or treacle. Barf. A decent banana butty needs wholemeal bread spread with good quality smooth peanut butter. I believe Elvis used to have his then fried in 1/2 lb of butter. I think that's a step too far myself. PS. Crunchy peanut butter is the work of the devil.

I'll add a question to the argument. Bacon buttie or Sasauge buttie? Top quality snags on lightly toasted bread with English mustard, but no mustard if you have a fried egg. Luxury
