The Premier League has the big brands (the top clubs) and the customers (the fans) and quite some intellectual property in terms of how to run a (financially) successful league but like in so many walks of life we have largely outsourced the dirty business of actually playing the game to people from overseas because they do it better and more cheaply, as a result the national team suffers. Think of it like going in to Pret a Manger of Costa Coffee where you get served by a bright young thing from Portugal or Poland or Latvia or wherever it might be rather than some simpleton they have just dragged kicking and screaming from the job centre What a great analogy. Thanks you Sir. It's a little crude and needs some finessing but I think I am on to something. Worst case there is a decent dissertation in there for a thrusting student!

I understand the sentiment but if Big Sam chooses to play those players that aren't playing at their clubs then he is part of the problem. There is a solution to all of this. It doesn't start with the Premier League stipulating what are discriminatory laws that will never work and will never gain support from the teams. First of all, in my opinion, players should make the England Squad on form and form alone. If a player is not playing then this cannot be judged, sufficient reason to not make the selection for the England team. When this happens players, at said clubs, will not gain England Caps. They will lose some of their lucrative endorsements and the adulation of kids nationwide. Maybe then Theo, the Ox et al will move on to clubs where they can play week in week out. I hate Wiltshit but hats off he has gained some brownie points from me. The irony is that Leicester proved last year that names mean nothing. It's teams that win. They had a selection of very good and good players that came together to win over the course of a whole season! Not just a cup run with a surprise victory in a blood and guts final. Instead Sam starts a team without Drinkwater in the starting line-up!? The problem with that is, if we pick only England players on form , we will probably start the game with only 4 players. There are a couple at Stafford Rangers who have started the season well though.

Blame tv/ sky ....!!!! That's why the English football team is shite...!!! Too much money in the game, foreign fuckin players, not pushing on the English youngsters Is that really the reason though? When I first started watching footy as a kid in the 70's, England didn't even qualify for the World Cup in '74 and '78, yet there was hardly a foreign player playing over here.

"Uefa data shows that there are only 2,769 English coaches holding Uefa's B, A and Pro badges, its top qualifications. Spain has produced 23,995, Italy 29,420, Germany 34,970 and France 17,588. Between them those four nations have provided eight of the 12 finalists at all the World Cups and European Championships since 1998. England, meanwhile, have not appeared in a tournament final in 44 years."
We don't produce enough footballers who are 'good' enough and we clearly don't even have the desire to do anything about it.
Quite simply, our arrogance in believing that we're some sort of international footballing powerhouse (when we're not) has held us back for decades and there doesn't appear to be anything to suggest that anything is likely to change in the near future.

While the volume is true, there are literally thousands of us volunteers out there every weekend trying to put football on for kids of all abilities I did my Level 1 in 2009 (paid for by my club and subsidised by McDonalds), didnt see the point in continuing up the ladder (there are only 5 levels - 1, 2, UEFA B, UEFA A then UEFA PRO), because as a 'sunday league coach', I cant justify the cost and time to do the others Level 2 is a couple of weekends studying (which is OK), but then 12 assessments over a period of time, and costs several hundred pounds to complete. I was tempted but couldnt justify the cost However a UEFA B licence is literally months of studying and assessment, and I dread to think on the others (presume UEFA A and Pro you have to be coaching under observation at the top level) Cost and time are the issues - the level 1 is around £130, but there arent enough courses - every one on the Staffs FA website gets filled in minutes. On top of that there are the demands of continuous renewal of CRB/DBB for criminal disclosure (not the same one if you have a cricket one, or a school one, or any other CRB, no you have to pay for a special FA one - money making racket) - thats renewable every 3 years Then the Safeguarding course - another £15-20 every 3 years - 4 hours of your life you cannot get back! And the first aid course - up to £50 to attend one every 3 years Our club as Standard Chartered with the FA needs a Child Welfare Officer (thats me as well...), another course and £20-30 cost Muggins here is also local branch secretary dealing with everybody elses issues too! They wonder why people dont want to do it, and thats before they keep changing the rules every couple of years (strangely after another England shocker) - what that has to do with 6 year olds in local mini leagues is beyond me! Time, money, effort - and the FAs, for all the gazillions they make, plough literally NOTHING back into pitches, facilities, training and coaching, help and support - its all done by the goodwill and endeavours of local volunteers. Our pitches here are a fecking disgrace, our council barely reseeds them, they arent cut for months on end, burn the lines in to save doing them again, allow dog walkers to shit all over them without penalty, and are all by the local park so all week long kids play on them (which is their perogative) but means by December all the grass has gone from the goalmouth! I look forward to away games at Milton etc where its all lush :-) We do what we can though!

Dont know why I still get so cross by it, its my last year this one (had my boys from u7, now nearly blokes in our u15 year), have seen a load of changes in rules and other bollocks supposedly to make England better - none of mine (or any of the kids in our leagues) will play for England, all the top end kids are already being ruined by the academy system....thats a point I moaned at on page 1 :-)
The lads can go on and join our clubs u18 team after that, the better ones into the seconds or even into pub teams if they want - I loved switching to play with blokes at 16, skinning fat old defenders ha and then going to the pub etc - I hope my lad carries on! I played non stop from 12 to 35, wish I had played a few years longer but took on the kids instead when my boy was ready to play.
My youngest has just started u7s, I am just a parent there, its hard sitting just watching and not doing but I am going to enjoy it!

My kids team has just had to shell out to repair all their pitches after the local council washed their hands with the maintenance of them, there was a rock festival and the organisers who were meant to pay to repair any damage caused have decided they're not going to. Several hundreds of pounds it's cost to fix all of out of the pockets of parents. Yet in Australia, France, Holland, Switzerland, Austria etc. you drive through any decent sized village (never mind town or city) and all have an all weather pitch, a grass pitch in excellent condition, hockey pitches, basketball courts, a skate park the full works. The councils latest idea is for all the clubs in the league to pool their (limited) resources to buy the equipment, pay for somewhere to store it, and for someone to maintain the pitches week after week. I know times are allegedly hard but it really is a joke.....

The reason we failed to qualify for world cups 74 & 78 was because in those days it was a lot harder to qualify, only the group winner qualified "no play offs" and in both cases we were up against a very good side, Poland who finished 3rd at world cup 74 (and i would think anyone who was around then knows about THAT match when we somehow failed to beat them). Then in 78 Italy knocked us out on goal difference and they finished 4th in the finals.

England have been rubbish for years. The difference now is we don't have a totally shit manager. Woy should have gone straight after the world cup. The last two years have been a complete waste of time. The players really need to look at themselves. I still say Rooney is a waste of space on the field. I don't have the answers to the team. But i think big Sam might grind out some results in the long term.

The British success in the Olympics is in large part due to the financial support for successful sports, which is not apparent from the English FA and evidenced by the lack of coaches and facilities.
But I can't agree this is the sole reason. If people think it is hard trying to get financial support in England then they should try Wales where sport is dominated by rugby. I know from my own personal experience as a a club president it is extremely difficult to raise financial support from local businesses etc. to keep a football club going. Nevertheless Wales have demonstrated that against all the odds it is still possible to be successful in a tournament even with players who are generally pretty average.
As I posted above a lot of success is dependent on the character of individuals and how determined they are to succeed. Most importantly, (I repeat for the umpteenth time) football is a team game and success is dependent on the synergy of the players and the will to play for one another, as much as it is dependent on individual talent.

International football is a far lower standard than the premier league.
Summer tournament football is a different ball game. The standard is again shit. You just need to be hard to beat and lucky.
We've had brilliant players in the past. We've not had a good tournament manager in my life time. I actually think allardyce will be far better than other england managers since bobby Robswon'tat a tournament he won't give a fuck about havin to pick certain players, he'll have a plan to win and I trust that by then he'll have seen off wayne Rooney

The manager being a fuckwit was the biggest reason. I always find it interesting how many English players you see in foreign leagues (mainly European leagues). It seems quite big news when English players move aboard (even players like Kazim Richards). I doubt papers in Italy , France, Germany etc pay much attention to players moving abroad unless its the real big names. That must have an impact.

The Premier league is really a world league that just happens to be based in England. It's mainly foreign owners, players and managers have as much interest in England doing well as I have in yak herding. You should give yak herding a try, rawli. I did and have never regretted It! He said Yak herding John. You sure you read it correctly??

It is not also a case of the premier league being too successful. The gulf in reward between the premiership and the lower leagues can mean financial ruin for teams who are relegated has meant that teams cant rely on untested English talent encase they lose their place at the top trough.
Could it be the decision to keep the TV money for the top clubs in 91/ 92 now coming back to haunt us?
In other leagues there also tends to be a big gulf between the top teams and the teams below them meaning that in some cases they can afford to bring through some talent for a few years before the top clubs hoover them up. Likewise the top teams could take a punt. The prem is probably quite close because while we do talk about the top 6 we do see the occasional team breaking into that plus big clubs imploding for a season. When was the last time PSG, Bayern, Barca or Madrid didn't qualify for the champions league?

And as you ve pointed out there were failures straight away but we still managed to put in a good showing at world cups 82 86 & 90. But then it happened BANG! the birth of the premier league and that was it.Come on in Jonny Foreigner we,ll pay you whatever you want, we dont want our useless young players they wont get the crowds in, we,ll have some of your coaches aswell perhaps a couple of them would like to take over as England manager and fuck the team up even more. So as more & more foreign players have come to the premier league this IMO is the biggest reason (not saying its the only reason) for the decline of the England team. And yes we still should be beating a team like Iceland, but in the time that we have gone downhill they and others have got better, hence the fact that they made the euro finals.

The U21's are currently 6-1 to the good against Norway. The future's bright :-) How many has Rashford scored ? wont make any difference he still wont start for the shit this weekend they would rather pay stupid money to a 34 year old foreigner and play him.

Have we ever done well on the International stage?? .Even in 66 we werent favourites, we never have been, we have never in our history done that well, but in recent years we seen to think we can win everything. Why do we think we have the right to get to the final. Is it because our players get paid more(because getting plaid more doesn't make you a better player unfortunately) I see where you are coming from but we have just had our most successful ever "overseas" Olympics, so why can't we expect our footballers to do equally well on the World stage...OK, we all know its down to the obscene amount of money driving short termism and pulling in all the top foreign talent England will win nothing until the FA decide that they would REALLY like us to and a change of manager will make precious little difference

'Johnny foreigner' playing in England wasn't the reason we didn't qualify for USA '94, nor was it the reason for our failures in the 70s and 80s. He isn't the reason we can't win a penalty shoot out, can't beat teams like Iceland or lose to the first half-decent team we play - as we have done pretty much throughout the ages.
