I'm a fan of Diouf's particular brand of chaos, I usually forgive him his fluffs and fall overs because he puts defenders through a game, stays threatening, creates space for others to exploit {theoretically}, and will score... blah blah blah... But today, {even for me who loves the man} he was infuriating. What the fuck are we doing in training if Diouf isn't even fit to tie his own shoelaces? He didn't have a role today imo. Should have been right wing being fed by Bardsley etc, drifting into the box when Arnie's on the bo. But he seemed to play as a lone striker, but with very little to support it. Seemed to me he loitered in ineffective areas and neither him nor us did enough to mix it up. The shoe incident made me incandescant. Been trying to google an image of Wolfie doing Diouf's laces, think it was Newcastle... Can't Hughes sort him out with velcro? He put Bojan through with a beautiful bit of skill though. Bad day for Mame, but not terminal I'm sure.

Tried to be positive with Diouf but he he is no target man seems to end up on the deck at every challenge can't head a ball or trap a ball unless its an instant reaction.but above all with the likes of Annie and bojan quick passing he is way out of his depth.he seems to blame everything and everyone but himself.he just doesn't fit in because he's crap.feel sorry for the other strikers on the bench.

I don't think he is what we need up front but its not his fault the creative players behind him are so consistently shit

He's shit for us. If we don't sign someone who can put em away it'll kill our season and confine us to mid table boredom. I would take mid table now

Ah yes, all that supply he had in front of goal. All those sitters he missed. All those aerial crosses he got. Truly criminal. Final third remains disjointed. They don't want to play the crossing high game. They want to pass the ball in. Ive stuck up for him a lot since he's been here but today he really was poor. Did he win a header 1st half? and whilst I agree he didn't have much supply but he also needs to add to the link up play and he doesnt seem to have the tools to do that. On the header note...

So what if he didn't score?! doesn't mean we should sell him.
As said above, he should stay here and fight for his place IF we sign another striker.
Whats the guy meant to do if he is feeding off scraps largely at times.

Diouf isn't a bad player but he needs the ball in front of him and that isn't how we play. Nail on head,a striker is always more effective driving forward with pace with defenders backtracking not static waiting trying to keep onside.

It was a miracle he won any aerial duels at all, the balls up to him were just floaters, giving the defender behind him all the time in the world to come over the top of him. When he did head it on there was no one advanced enough to get the ball anyway. Don't think he fits how MH is trying to play, though I'm not sure what it is he's trying to do, as whoever plays up top will never score much, given the paucity of the supply. This system is crying out for a winger who can actually get past people and cross, unfortunately not something Arnie or Shaquiri ever do.

Sorry but talking about service isn't cutting it anymore. That excuse has been used far too many times for his poor performances.
The guy is technically poor. He struggles to control a ball the majority of the time, he can't pass and his composure in front of goal leaves a lot to be desired. On top of that, he just doesn't have a footballing brain, against M'Boro he was always in the wrong place, he can't predict the play like those with a natural footballing brain can. It showed against Man City as well.
He will score goals with good service, because he has the physical attributes, strength and power. You just might have to put about 20 on a plate before he nets one.
I have defended Diouf and banged the 'no service' drum for long enough. We can't keep using that as an excuse for his overall general poor play, as a Striker at this level you have to be good technically as well as have the physical attributes. I also think you need to offer more to the team at this level than to just bang them in when they're on a plate for you. We need a replacement without fail before the window closes and until then we should start with Walters up top.

Well if we had Sobhi and Shaq swinging in the crosses, any of our strikers might do ok.

They may or may not have great technical ability but they have the habit of being in the right place at the right time. They will score with their knee, backside or shin if needs be. They are lucky because they create their own luck. Sadly Diouf doesn't fit these characteristics and very few do. Walters puts himself in to places where it hurts but he is aging and we need replacements. Whether Beharino is the solution we may see. Certainly Diouf, Joselu, Crouch or even Walters aren't the answer, perhaps Arnie should have a chance, he has the ability and is strong enough on the ball.

Despite his shortcomings he doesn't deserve the abuse he gets. Where I sit, every game I will hear "fucking useless tosser" if he so much as misplaces a pass. Think at one point someone shouted at him to fuck off to the bench when he lost his boot. You'd think he isn't even a Stoke player at times.

As I've said on the Wolly thread (not sure why I put it their tbh but anyway) the attacking players just don't trust Diouf and choose to ignore his runs. Diouf can be useful but his technical deficiencies mean players like Bojan and Arnie often ignore him. Good option away from home (in theory) but I've never been much for Diouf starting at home, especially against teams who defend deep.

Seen him do it many times and seen hos frustration when he's made a good run only for him to see Whelan pass the ball sideways to one of our fullbacks

My last point was link up play and it would interesting to see if any of those headers found a team mate I seem to remember a lot of 50p headers.

I don't know the first half stats sadly. I think there's an aerial threat there, particularly in the box, but outside of it the link up needs to be better. It's just a shame we're not using his aerial ability to cause havoc in the opposition area.

This 'he doesn't get service' is tedious. We don't play like that and Hughes isn't going to change that. Having a striker like Berahino will make a huge difference because he can play football. It's no coincidence that our most fluent football/chances came with the false 9 because all 3 forwards could play football/had the telepathy to do so.
Diouf has an atrocious touch, a poor footballing brain, doesn't stretch defenders anywhere near as much as he should, and has one of the worst finishes I've seen in the top flight. What he can do well is sprint and win headers. Unfortunately, he's no use in Hughes footballing system which requires all of which he is poor at. Defence is the priority, but a footballing striker will make a difference.
