Prompted mainly by seeing Cantona doing his thing in the advertising world recently. Decent player but quite a character. (seagulls, trawlers etc).
Inevitably during my chat with my mate Arnie cropped up, bit of an enigma type of person, decent footballer and brings bit of character to the game.
We then tried to pick a few others that fell into the same sort of remit from the present crop doing the rounds, and came up wanting.
Discounting the likes of Wilshite etc, who's out there at the moment providing the occasional smile or in times gone by.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - His best quotes include:
Talking about his loan offer from Arsenal at 17 - "Zlatan doesn't do auditions" "Now I am here, the people of Paris will have more to look at than The Mona Lisa" When asked what he bought his wife for her birthday - "Nothing, she already has Zlatan" Commenting on his role as second Striker to Messi "You don't buy a ferrari and drive it like a fiat"
He's also scored some unbelievable goals in his career too, one that Ryan probably still sees in his dreams.
I'm kind of hoping he signs for United just to see him at the Brit in person.

It's a different nastier world now. A 'character' now would be figure of hate and face book groups saying what a c**t he is.
David Bentley had a lot of spark about him. When he joined Spurs he did an interview and was bristling with excitement about his new club and what geeat players were there. It was refreshing to see a footballer clearly enjoying his job. The response from the public was derision and bile. Modern fan hate culture it is. Hate first think second.

Charachters are always much better when looked at nostalgically
We look back at the 80s as a great era but back then we looked at the 60s....Vinnie Jones was a defender people laughed at saying as a hard man he couldn't compete with Norman Hunter etc etc but now we have him held up as the toughest of the tough when compared with today's tough players
It's the same at work ...people saying it wasn't like this 20 years ago when we could have a laugh etc when in reality it was ....it was as shite back then as it is now in fact it was no different
Nostalgia eh ....it's a load of bollocks

Always found Jimmy Bullard quite amusing. The two that spring to mind are laughing in Duncan Fergusons face when he got himself send off and when he ran in and dived over a group of players during a goalmouth scrambled

Jimmy Bullard - legend! Just had fun playing the game! He did the question and answer thing in 442 and he is a fucking nob. He went on about his laughs but bloody hell it was the kind of banal rubbish a 10 year old might like. Mind you he is a footballer.

On the back of that he earned himself a media career. I listened to a couple of his Magic Sponge podcasts, basically him giggling like a schoolgirl and saying bottom and willy a lot

But the equivalent for me thinking he is an unfunny nob for a lot of persons is to scream about hom being a c**t and hope he gets his legs broke eyc.

Managers:
Claudio Ranieri (Dilla ding Dilla dong is one of the best things I've heard) Big Sam (Bias maybe, but he's a character - dancing in Marbella, pushing opposition players out of the way, laughing at Chico diving) Alan Pardew (Despise him but he has funny moments - that dance in the cup final man) Ian Holloway (Bit in the past but he was always entertaining to watch/listen to) Di Canio (See Holloway)
Can't think of a lot of players who are good characters - Bullard was definitely one of them, but it's sad that I don't know a lot of players who are eccentric/entertaining.

Muni does some horrendous dance moves, does that count? Character. Loveable nice guy. The way modern fans drone on and critique every club decision as if they are geniuses, and tear their own players apart it's no wonder there's no characters in the game.
