A shame we never bought him back beyond his loan spell in 1996/97. I remember him and Sheron ripping Charlton's defence apart when we won at the Valley that season, likewise when we beat Swindon and Steino scored twice (just found the goals from that game below). With Sturridge out injured that could have been 'SAS 2' Even after Sheron had gone imagine if we had Stein alongside Thorney instead of spending those wages on Paul fucking Stewart. Given he ended up at Bournemouth I doubt he was out of reach. He scored 44 goals over two seasons with Bournemouth while playing in the same Division we were struggling in! Funnily enough, I mentioned how devastated I was when he didn't convert that loan spell into a permanent deal. He said that he desperately wanted to come back, offered to take a significant pay cut to return but we couldn't afford him. He was devastated and said that he never really recovered from the blow of not returning permanently even though he went to Bournemouth and did well. He also said he was glad he never scored against us. He really did give me the impression that he loves us every bit as much as we love him. Steino scored away at Huddersfield (I can't remember if we won or drew) but Stein and Sheron were just hitting their straps as a partnership. Stein went back and our season fell apart.

He wasn't quite the same in that second spell (I suppose he'd have been about 31 or 32 then?) but he still improved us at the time. It was the same with Biggins- he was only away for about 18 months but just wasn't the same second time around. For pure goalscoring ability, Steino's top dog but I'd always take Fuller over him based on their all-round game. Both legends though.

Big John wasn't a great footballer, but a great goalscorer, and don't get me going on that pathetic bust by the boothen end

You can blame Ruud Bullitt for that. That twat offered a ridiculous contract to stein meaning he couldn't go on a free back to us. We were tight with money back then..

Steino is my favourite Stoke player ever. I was a young lad watching him down the Vic. Got so many happy memories of watching him. He was the first player i remember seeing who truley got me so excited everytime he got the ball. And i know we have had so many bigger games since, but the Man United match at the Vic is still up there with my best ever Stoke matches. That night Steino was unbelievable. just because that first 20 secs will never EVER get boring What a fcuking goal that was. It gets better and better with every watch. I was right behind that in the Butler Street seats and I can remember that night like it was yesterday. People get on about Jamie Vardy now but Stein would knock him into next week.

I was looking at the stats the other day, Steino scored a goal for us in just under every 2 games, Ric was 1 in 4, so I know who I'd want a modern clone of given our scoring woes at present :-) Gareth Crooks was 1 in 3 for us ....no wonder he gets so much shit thrown at him on here

Steino... Absolute magic. You always had the feeling he would score whenever he had the ball. I've been following Stoke since the early 70's and no player has excited me more on the ball than Steino.
Let's not forget Bertie Biggins' contribution to Steins glory either...

I've always wondered just what the Ref said to him after the first goal against Man U. He didn't "over celebrate" so it can't (surely) have been anything of the "get back in your own half quick, son, or it's a card" sort of thing

Just watching the Autoglass clip......wow, what a beast Overson was. The way he strides onto the pitch, all calm in a Gladiatorial manner.....must've given the rest of the team so much confidence when you have a leader like that.

Loved Big Vince, we had so many popular players back then who the fans loved, Cranny, Sandford, Rooster, Beest. One thing that has got me wondering about the 92-93 side, after promotion, what happened to Rooster? He never featured as far as i remember, anyone know what happened with him?

Signed for Burnley that summer, I think.
