If not are there any players who have deserved it?

While certain numbers are associated with players the whole squad number system didn't become a requirement outside the Premiership until 1999/00. Personally I don't think we've had anyone who you'd consider worth retiring in that time. Also most of the retirements in the English leagues tend to relate to a posthumous honour when a tragedy has happened and a player has died. Prior to 1999 nobody at Stoke had a set number. A player could bounce around between shirt numbers throughout the season. For example, browsing through some older programmes not so long ago and Conroy was popping up in 7, 8, 9 and 10 at different stages in the early 70s, sometimes weekly. There's a Wikipedia page on this subject if anyone is interested - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_retired_numbers_in_association_football

No.
We still have a 1, 7 and 9!!!
Different times I'm afraid where squad numbers didn't exist and we haven't had any legends since squad numbers did exist (despite what some might think).

while I understand the sentiment, it isn't anything I would support. It's a negative response to do away with something, I much prefer a positive response like naming a stand etc.

I don't really like the idea of retiring shirts. A famous shirt should be something to aspire to and emulate, like Newcastle's number 9 shirt or Man U's number 7.

Four defenders, Four defensive midfielders, One on the center line and a forward. Can we have 2 number 6's for example?

I tend to think the number 5 shirt (or its modern day equivalent) is where you'd find the majority of our jewels, or given the nature of the central defender position, our rough diamonds.

And then it becomes all about the team. Whoever wears the #7 shirt is simply fulfilling the role of outside right on that given day. Linking numbers to players rather than positions panders to the modern cult of celebrity rather than a team ethic.

Spot on If the player actually died for the club or similar then might be a case but the point is that the club and the team are bigger than any one component
