This is the title of a set of cards along with some other little goodies the club gave to my dad on Saturday before the Sunderland game. A nice gesture to help celebrate his 90th birthday, it reads like this;
Tony Waddington.
Gordon Banks. Jackie Marsh. Mike Pejic. Ryan Shawcross. Denis Smith. Sir Stan. Alan Hudson. Jimmy Greenhoff. Peter Hoekstra. Mark Stein. Ricardo Fuller.
Only putting this here because it made interesting half time reading along with the programme and a wrights pie.
Dad was a tad disappointed at the result. At 90 he still has a valid opinon on certain aspects of the game. I've come to realise that green isn't his favourite colour.

On footballing ability Neil Franklin would be in at centre half and Freddie Steele and John Ritchie (as leading goal scorer) would have a case to be included. I might swap Mark Chamberlain for Peter Hoekstra. But how do you leave out one of Smith or Shawcross? And what about Eric Skeels with over 600 games and Terry Conroy, a man who has spent his life at Stoke City.
Shows how difficult it is to pick this kind of 11.

My late Dad was a Stokie from 1930 until his death late last year. He often talked of the team of 1934-35-36 that were in top 10 for those years. As well as Freddie Steele, he reckoned many of that team would've graced the current team

Nice touch. And so your Dad should have an opinion!! I wish my Dad was here to give his! I look back with fondness at some of the lads that have worn the shirt. Players like Clamp, Viollet, Hudson, Greenhoff, Steino, the list goes on and on! To be honest chuffedstokie I'd be hard pushed to pick my best eleven. I hope you, your dear old Dad, and indeed me, continue to pick our best eleven for years and years. Good luck!

As much as I loved Peter Hoekstra I'd have gone with Etherington above him in that 150 Year anniversary team if we were looking for a modern day winger. He was important to us staying up in 2009, made more and scored more in the top flight, not to forget the FA Cup season where he deserved an England call up.
They added some substitutes to the 150 year team by the way. They were Asmir Begovic, Lee Dixon, Neil Franklin, Terry Conroy and John Ritchie

Fair play to the club. He too came up with some names and events that kept you listening. Hopefully I'll get him to another game August / September time. His all time eleven came with all details apart from inside leg measurements. Thanks again,fingers crossed we can all follow your last few sentiments.

We met Hoekstra a few years ago in walkabout Hanley.
He was at Stoke with the FC Groningen youth team and reliving his memories of Stoke nights out.
Brought the big guy a drink and my mate told him he was the second best left winger he'd seen play for Stoke. Peter looked quite shocked and asked who was the first to which my mate said "Matty Etherington of course"
He took it in great spirit. Didn't throw any shapes with us though probably scared of doing his knees in.

While we were on the pitch I offered a bit of advice to Crouchy as he went past. To his never ending credit he ignored every word.
