Why not go all out. Not much to lose (except a few million quid for finishing lower than 9th) and a chance to finish on a high and impress some potential signees:
Haugaard Bardsley Shawcross Munisesa Pieters Shaqiri Whelan Adam Arnautovic Joselu Bojan
Go for it, Sparky.

Bojan isn't a striker, he can't resist dropping deep to collect the ball & try to dictate play. The formation you suggest is pretty much 4-2-3-1 again. And we've tried that formation before, most notably in the 2-0 defeat at home to Watford.
Sparky generally plays a more offensive 4-2-3-1 formation at home & a safer 4-3-3 away from home. The last time we tried playing 4-4-2 was in the 3-0 tonking at Leicester. And before that in the 2-0 defeat at the Emirates. The problem is if you're going to play a 2 man midfield, you better pray that those 2 midfielders can cover a hell of a lot of ground. Take Kante & Drinkwater for instance, on average they cover more distance than most players in the league, which is why Leicester can play 4-4-2 so effectively. Whelan, Adam, Van Ginkel, Imbula - none of them have the pace & stamina to play in a 2 man midfield. Nzonzi did.

It would have to be Joselu and Diouf or Walters up top if we played 4-4-2.

If Bojan drops back it changes to 4-2-3-1 anyway. I'd just like to see Bojan instead of Imbula because he gets forward quicker. He is more likely to score than Inbula because he can shoot with both feet and he doesn't get caught in possession from behind. Bojan came to Stoke in part because Hughes told him he would play CF and he wasn't interested in playing with a big lumbering striker. I can't recall seeing Bojan and Joselu in the middle very often. It just seems to me that was the plan when they were signed, but he's not tried it much.

Nothing wrong with 4:4;2 home or away - you have to consider what the opposing teams doing mind you
and when Istarted playing it used to be
5 - 3- 2 -1

532 for me with wingbacks, gets the best out of johnson, Adam(who plays better in a cm 3) allows for Imbula to play his game, Arnautovic as a deep lying forward

Diouf paired with Joselu would be the pairing for me if we ever play an out and out front two.
Not t h at we will

How about; Jacob Bards Ryan Geoff Eric Shaq Imbula Arnie Bojan Joselu Diouf Fuck the defensive midfield go for the throat. It'll probably be Jocob Brads Ryan Geoff Eric Walters Whelan Imbula Adam Arnie Crouch Gouranga.

I hate the 1 up front bollocks most seem to be playing these days. Give me a Sutton/shearer , Yorke/cole , berbatov/Keane , gudjohnsen/hasslebank , Beardsley/lineker , ramario/bebeto , Henry/bergkamp , rush/dalglish , biggins/stein , Suarez/Sturridge. Pairing any day of the week.

We'd need a complete overhaul to play 442. We have way too many AMs no viable strike partnership and not enough box to box / defensive midfielders. Bojan, Shaq, Imbula, Charlie couldn't play in a 442.

Adam has proved time and time again that he is far more disciplined than he is given credit for and despite his portly frame, he does have an ability to get about the pitch. Our goals conceded record with him on the pitch this season makes for exceptional (and surprising) reading.

I think 4-4-2 requires wingers who will cross a ball and not venture inside EVERY time.
I don't think Arnie or shaqiri can play as conventional wingers so for me it would be a no.

I'm in for any system, any system at all, that gets Bojan in the side. I agree. Bojan showed yesterday that he's a great striker. He can play behind striker as well but we have that spot covered. Bony and Bojan up front with Allen and Adam following up behind them and two of three from Shaqiri, Sohbi and Annie on the wings is very tasty. The only weakness is we now only have one defensive midfield player and I am not sure Whelan or Cameron can handle that on their own. Adam certainly can't - that being said, we did end up yesterday with this formation and it worked: Grant Bardsley Indi Shawcross Pieters Walters Adam Allen Bojan Crouch Diouf Replace Diouf with Arni, Shaqiri for Walters and Bony for Crouch and it fits nicely.

442 makes for good football but you can't just get swamped in midfield you've got to match up to your opponents unless you've got some total beasts in your midfield which we haven't. I've been impressed with Chelsea's system in recent weeks, ignoring their quality they just seem to have more players in every area of the pitch. Very well orchestrated.

That's why I doubted Cameron and Whelan can't handle the DM role alone. However, maybe it's worth switching to it after 70-75 min when the opposition midfield is running out of gas. I guess that why somethings akin to that formation worked yesterday.

The system is so well orchestrated it seems like they have more players. Conte is a revelation theres one thing having good players in the right positions, theres another thing having a plan but the bloke is all over it every single minute. He's not just spouting banal crap like Pulis' Goaaaarn Jon. He's keeping everyone on message and feeding them tactical information constantly. Got to say the standard of play in the Premier League is streets ahead of last season for some reason, very interesting at the top.

They play with 3 at the back now so it's risk and reward It's due to Alonso and Moses striking a perfect balance as wing-backs. Alonso is the more defensive of the two (but still v. good attacking) whilst Moses is obviously incredible in attack and is honing his defensive side. That gives 4/5 at the back when defending and 4/5 up top when attacking. Coupled with Matic (in good form) and Kante doing all the donkey work in the middle (Kante doing his 'playing both sides of the central mid' akin to his role at Leicester), they've got incredible balance (helped by the front three working in terrific form). To be fair, the three CBs are doing well, which helps. I think the system will falter when/if Alonso and Moses get injured. I'd like to see us try it, if only in one match as an experiment: Grant Indi Shawcross Cameron Bardsley Allen Whelan/Adam Pieters Shaq Bony/Bojan Arnie Problem with our version of the 343 is that I don't think Pieters or Bardo are quite solid or attacking enough to fully exploit the width. Also, both of the midfielders are tiny and may possibly get outmuscled by big destroyer-types (Allen alongside a destroyer DM would be ideal). It can easily shift to a 4231 though (Cameron into midfield, Allen in the no. 10). 352 doesn't seem to work with our personnel.

Good analysis we're probably four players away from being able to try that formation. 2 wingbacks, quality CB, beast of a CDM. Indeed. Phil Jones fits the bill for the CB as he can move into midfield if the formation shifts. Hopefully his future somehow lies away from Manure. CDM should and could still be Imbula, but Hughes needs to sort that position out, cover/replacement-wise, and maybe in Jan (as much as Whelan is in steady form atm). Wing-backs are a difficult one (given that getting two fullbacks with immense defensive and attacking qualities is v. difficult - although you can balance it depending on your wingers e.g. Arnie would profit more from an attacking LB, Shaq from a defensive RB), and will probably be addressed in the summer. Trippier probably fits the bill for the right, but I'm unsure about the left.
