Went on a training course today where the subject of discussion was; Intermittent Reinforcement. Which basically explains why people gamble and/or follow a football team. Now and again you might win a bet or watch your team win, say once out of five, (that's the 'intermittent' bit.) What 're-inforces' the behaviour is the pure joy of winning (money or football match) So given our shit run of form I'm looking for a bit of 'Intermittent Reinforcement' tomorrow. Hopefully.

Wouldn't the negative reinforcement of seeing your team lose more often than they win outweigh the positive conditiong of seeing your team win only intermittently though?
Management dream ticket of BF Skinner and Pavlov to work on our set pieces....

Management dream ticket of BF Skinner and Pavlov to work on our set pieces.... No. Your team only has to win occasionally. Similarly to putting money in a slot machine. The occasional win reinforces the conditionin more than winning continuously (when the Law of Diminishing Returns sets in). This is backed up by research. This intermittent factor is thought to have a more powerful effect on behaviour than continuous winning. The THOUGHT of winning becomes more powerful than the actual winning itself. The less you get of something..the more you want it. Sex is a good example. So is winning the lottery. You have a 10 million to one chance of winning the lottery but millions still do it. I've got a 30-1 chance of sex..given that my wife only wants it once a month. Go on Stoke !!!

So why do the big clubs have the most fans? Because the soft mardarses can't bear the thought of losing very often. They have got to be seen as supporting success, therefore they believe they are part of it. It's so much more difficult following a team that has only a little success. Therefore, that makes us better than them. Great isn't it. Hold your heads up boys. We are better than them. Think about it! A bit of reverse psychology for you. When you see all those manure fans with their stupid shirt's on, just think to yourselves, I'm better than him or them. Just do it. You know it makes sense! By the way, I'm just using manure as an example. That goes for all the big time Charlie's!

Following a football team is almost a sense of belonging to a group or a family. Acceptance if you like. It's sticks with you for life, regardless of good times or bad. Gambling is either enjoyment or addiction. Not much middle ground.

Gambling is either enjoyment or addiction. Not much middle ground. I've spent about £100,000 supporting Stoke over the years. Some people sacrifice anything to watch their team play. I would argue in some cases that football is an addiction. It's also like a big family..going to a game is a quasi religious experience for me. I don't care whether Stoke win lose or draw. I'll still pay to watch them.

So why do the biggest clubs have the most fans? aren't most of them big because they have got a lot of fans??? And ultimately most successful: man ure, Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern etc. is intermittent reinforcement better or worse for us? Or are we just idiots?
