I know I'll probably get slaughtered for bringing this up again but this is the one defeat that's still really hard to take. One nil down at home, never won at Anfield in 50 years with everyone writing us off before the game & then to go there & put in that sort of winning performance (and that too without our captain), taking the tie to extra time & then get knocked out in penalties is just a terrible experience, especially if you were there that night. Never been so devastated & so proud of my team at the same time.

Should be replayed due to Dippers playing a cheat on PEDs.

I don't agree with that. Second leg we were worthy winners but we didn't play them off the park like some claimed. No but neither did they. Liverpool didn't have an attempt on goal in the second half at the Brit & yes we were very poor but they were not much better either.

If 'pool hadn't injured two penalty takers i.e. Arnie and Charlie we'd had won the penalty shoot-out?!

Our players have never mentally recovered from that night. We haven't been the same team since.

It was sad BUT it was two legs and we only played in one of them. So did they For the first leg we were very lucky to come away only 1 down. We were absolutely battered. Should have been 3 or 4 While we were the better team in the second leg it wasn't anywhere near as one-sided a game. We were awful in that first leg and totally outplayed all over the park. I think some rose tinted glasses going on here.

I've never had a game that has taken me over a month too recover from, I thought I'd never let it get to that point I spent the next three days crying (sometimes in public)

Should be replayed due to Dippers playing a cheat on PEDs. I would agree but I'm fucked if I fancy our lot for a trip to Anfield right now.

I don't agree with that. Second leg we were worthy winners but we didn't play them off the park like some claimed. They didn't play us off the park either. They were the better side for 40 minutes of a two legged tie. For the remainder of the contest, it was us forcing the game and us in control for long spells. It was a devastating defeat and one which the club as a whole hasn't yet recovered from...supporters, players or management team.

Liverpool were easily the better side in the first leg and could have won by more......but didn't!!! And Stoke were marginally the better side in the second leg and could have won......but didn't!!! Therefore no one has the right to say there team should have been the one at Wembley....in the same way that Liverpool can't (or shouldn't) say their team had every right to be at Wembley!!! But that's not the point here, the OP was basically just stating that it was (and probably still is) gut wrenching to go out the way we did!!! Don't think it has anything to do with whatever colour glasses you've got on???

I've never been so devastated. Not even after the FA cup final. Didn't talk to my family or anybody in the office (60 people) for a week. So proud, but so heartbreaking. We were so, so close, and still I keep imagining what could've been. The scenes if we'd have won it. Ahhhhh

Do Liverpool still have the bragging rights over the fact we haven't beaten them at Anfield in 50+ years???? Over the 90 minutes we won, and had it been a league match that would have been the end of it!!!! Yet we still walked away having lost???

I couldn't see the positives through the fact that we weren't going to Wembley. It was amazing and the positives were massive but they almost felt like negatives when we'd come so close, played so well and lost it like that. I was that upset about it compared to any other time we've lost that my Grandad was consoling me and he has been taking every defeat badly for 65 years. Still makes my stomach turn now, can't even bring myself to watch the penalties again. Can we please burn this thread ceremoniously so I don't have to go through it anymore...

Caving in against Palace in the FA Cup lived with me for longer. In three months where they only won three games, two were against us.
Whilst quite not the end, the beginning of the end of this season can be traced back to that day.

I too think our season effectively ended after this match. I do believe though that Crouch and maybe Muniesa weren't up to taking their penalties. Penalties is no way to win a match , unless it's Stoke !

Whilst quite not the end, the beginning of the end of this season can be traced back to that day. In terms of what followed, it is fair to highlight that defeat as a big point in the season. I was desperately disappointed after that game as I mentioned in another thread earlier this week. To me, that certainly felt like the end of the season. The period of time that has elapsed since that day has felt like two seasons to be fair. The end of this season can't come quickly enough. I'm looking forward to the break.
