I don't think it was stupid. He's been a good player this season but it's been debated a lot whether he's been that useful in certain games especially home ones. The fact of the matter is if he's out till Christmas as someone has posted, probably won't be fully fit until the end of next season due to no pre-season so we'll either let him go after he's gained fitness or give him an extra year when personally I would be hoping we'd have fresh blood in his position His position doesn't need pace, he's been brilliant this season, who else are we going get for free and be better than him? I also think he's better suited to certain games but to write him off and then even say we will give him a contract because we "feel sorry for him" is a absolute joke. The bloke deserves a new contract. My player of the season. Think you've definitely jumped on the defensive for no reason. I never wrote him off, I just questioned whether the same thing that happened to Odemwingie will happen to Afellay. No player deserves a new contract without justifying it in my opinion, if he comes back after Christmas and plays a blinder for the next five months then he will deserve it otherwise the jury is out for me.

This is actually depressing me, of all players he does not deserve that. Big big summer ahead.

Gutting, he's player of the season for me.
We've been incredibly unlucky with injuries, let's hope we can stay relatively injury free next season.

At what point do we stop saying we're unlucky and start questioning our approach to training, player rotation etc. We need a fucking big summer. No doubt about it. We need two proper premier league midfield players now as a very minimum . 2 wingers too and a centre half all three of which need to be capablw if going straight in to the team
And 1 goal scorer and a reserve keeper .
That's some summer required

Peter Odemwingie never recovered properly, I fear for Affelay - he was a ray of hope.

Just rams home to those fools who say we should rest players in certain games to avoid injury It can happen at anytime It's not that simple is it? They can but when you've got fatigue issues etc and can see an injury coming from a mile off then it's daft.

Aren't they the kind of injuries that you can't legislate for? It's the muscular injuries that we could be avoiding through different training. Having said that, I think both Leicester and Spurs have both shown what an asset having a good fitness regime can be. So we should look to get fitter and press harder.

Could mean he has played his last game for Stoke! A pity as he has been one of the few bright spots lately!

Could see there being something in that as you tend to see these injuries suffered by players coming back from another injury.

Dreadful for the lad.
He will effectively miss the whole of next season as he won't be fully fit.
He must be concerned that this will be the end of his career as a top player.

It's a shame for the lad, but it's hardly a suprise. He's suffered injuries throughout his career, we've actually done well to get as many games out of him as we have.
If we keep signing injury prone players we probably shouldn't act quite so shocked when they get injured.

Afellay is far more useful than PO Of course, didn't mean to sound disrespectful just honest. Will he be as useful after his injury? He's already suffered so many. I just don't want us to waste another space and wages on someone if we don't plan on using him. We don't have any option about paying his wages for the length of his contract. It may be good news for both him and us if he is back next Christmas. It means he will be left out of the 25 man squad for the first half of the season and then we have January to decide if he should be included in the squad for the second half of the season. If he does get into the squad then he has three and a half months to try to earn a further contract with us. I'm gutted for the lad. Since he established himself in the starting eleven he's probably been as consistently fit (and on form) as anyone in the squad. I really thought his injury nightmare was behind him. Good luck Ibby - you are still in the running for my player of the year - I'll decide between you and Jack Butland at the end of the season.

This is awful news.
The only consolation is that in the two positions he can play, we do have a lot of other options. If we're going 4-2-3-1 for the most part, Bojan has the opportunity to nail down the No.10 role with Ireland as his stand-in, while Imbula was always going to wear the daddy-pants in the deeper 2. We also have Adam and, to a lesser extent, Cameron who can do a job there.
Shit news though- along with Anie and Butland he's been one of our players of the season.
