Have we ever had a dedicated thread to this socially stigmatised but much loved by the musically educated genre of music??
Although, I'm more of a metalhead, in my more reflective moments I find myself indulging in a bit of this. Its the missing link between classical & rock.
Very partial to the old Marillion, gave up soon after Fish left. Fish is a lyrical genius
Love the solos on these
And probably Marillion's finest hour..
Discovered these too and liked them; reminded me of the fish era marillion
These are good too; think the drummer used to be in marillion

Yes ive tried some old Genesis; its challenging but waaay better then the pop crap that came in the later years
Kind of the holy trio aren't they; Genesis, Floyd and tends to be either Yes or Rush.
hated Rush when I was younger; vocals grated but musically I love them now and can even handle Geddy Lee's vox now - and that bass playing too

Saw Marilyn at the Viccy Hall late 80's/eearly 90's,consummate live performers.Real to Reel was a great album.

With Steve Hogarth on vocals, they were touring the Seasons End album, just after they'd parted with Fish.
It was December 9th 1989 (remembered the year, had to look the date up)
Seasons End was a good album, still felt like a Fish era album but I jumped at Holidays In Eden; I think they were attempting an It Bites, prog meets pop kind of vibe?!
Brave in 1994 was a great album but I never really went back to Marillion again. Ive read reviews of later albums comparing their music to things like Radiohead; it wasn't really what i wanted to hear

On Lifeson, I loved his 70s playing, Im not so keen on the 80s guitar sound he had; too minimalistic, thin; was very influenced by reggae style playing.
Geddy Lee is an outstanding bass player. Love that bass on Cygnus X1. Sounds evil.

Prefer the type of music you hear on USA classic rock stations than prog Give me lynard skynard, James Taylor, Eagles and the like every time. Add in some maiden, guns and roses and that ilk and anything I between. That other shit isn't progress

Early Dire Straits not bad, Making Movies is an excellent album and I sorta liked Chris Rea until I saw him like at the Viccy Hall...every track had the obligatory self indulgent guitar solo.

Hes a bloody big cunt isn't he!
I think he turned up in Taggart once, many moons ago
Only listened to his first solo album; I liked it though but Fish needs Steve Rothery and vice versa. Neither act/band is the same without the other. Pete trewavas is an amazing bassist for Marillion too

I got my hands on Vigil and Internal Exile, bought the first two Marillion ex Fish albums and even went to see them but it just wasn't the same and so I called it a day. He was incredibly entertaining live prompting the audience to prompt him if he forgot any lyrics during performance

Id love a Marillion reunion with Fish but Hogarth has been with them more years and made more albums with them. For later fans, Fish is to Marillion what Dianno is to Maiden (I prefer Dianno actually but accept its cruder music) Never going to happen
I just think the two eras are basically two different bands

I saw Yes at a concert at the Victoria Ground in the 70's, with the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and I can't remember the other bands that took part that day. Can anyone else there that day remember the other bands ?

Never got on with Tangerine Dream, what about Gong, are they Progressive Rock? I'm only minimally acquainted with Frippertronics and King Crimson. What about Soft Machine and such, does that count?
The roots of Prog? 1967.
