Did anyone see the mighty Carlton on Soccer AM last Saturday? He was responding to recent comments by Matt (I think I am god) Le Tissier in a book about how CP was a bully and lucky to have won 18 caps for England.
Now I was never CP's greatest fan (lets face it, he was pretty shit) but his comments about MLT did make me chuckle (especially as that arsewipe Max Rushen was cringing and hopelessly trying to stop CP slagging off one of Sky's own). Here below is a copy of his diatribe:
"I always get stick," Palmer, 50, said. "It’s not deserved. It’s people’s perception, and people jump on the bandwagon. I don’t want to slag people off, but the other day Matt Le Tissier made a comment about me and he called me a bully in his book, which isn’t true.
"I wanted to win football matches, so if you played in the same team as me and you weren’t at it, we got a problem. Matt Le Tissier put in his book that I was a bully and asked, ‘How did he get 18 England caps?’
"Well why did you only get six (Le Tissier won eight caps)? People say he should have had more but why didn’t he? I’ve played more league games than him and I’ve got 18 England caps, so don’t criticise me and try and get publicity off the back of that. I would never do that about somebody else."
Palmer added: "Le Tissier was a fantastic footballer, but how can he criticise me when I can look back and say I’ve done the best that I could do. Has he done the best he could do? Big clubs came after him.
"It’s all right to play for one club if you’re at Chelsea. Southampton, with greatest respect, if Chelsea come in for you, go and test yourself."
MLT responded by Twitter:
"So, I've been getting stick on Soccer AM by the only footballer I knew who could control a ball further than he could kick it," said Le Tissier, adding a laughing face.
"By the way I totally respect Carlton Palmer for getting every ounce out of his career with the ability he had."
Hope it continues - should have them both on this weekend for a tête-à-tête (or should that be a tit a tit?)
BTW - I think I am actually in CP's corner for this as MLT was unbelievably talented but I think no drive to be the best, which he could of been if he put in more effort and like CP says had the resolve to test himself at a club challenging for silverware.

Totally disagree with you.
CP's assessment of MLT is bollocks. Was Shearer a lesser player for not going to Man U. Tissier put his love of football ahead of filthy lucre. A top player and a top man.
MLT's assessment of CP on the other hand is spot on. Leaving aside one cap wonders, he is without doubt the worst player to have played for England that I have seen. He may have made the most of his talent, but that is damming with faint praise. They guy was a 4th division player . All he could do was run around and shout. Mind you, that was the one criteria that Graham Turner Taylor (oops!) seemed to value more than anything else.

The fact MLT only won 8 caps to Palmer's 18 shows you everything that is wrong with the England national team.

I sympathise a bit with Palmer. He wasn't great but there really weren't a whole lot of options at the time and he was playing very well for a very good Sheffield Wednesday team at the time. He even had some good games for England.
Le Tissier was an incredible talent who scored some of the greatest goals English football has ever seen. He wasn't trusted by England managers and didn't have the career he might have though because he didn't apply himself enough on the pitch or off it.
Palmer squeezed the absolute most out of meagre talent. Le Tiss didn't get enough out of his.
I'm sure he doesn't give a shit though, he had a great career and is a good character, so fair play.

Le Tis does come across sometimes like an arrogant cunt. Whilst that England side which Carlton Palmer was a part of was indeed gash and Le Tissier should undoubtedly have been capped more also, we can all definitively agree that Max Rushden is definitely a total arsewipe. Never thought much of pob but he's within his rights to call Le Tis out if he's slagged him off in his book. Again Le Tissier shows his arrogance with his tweeted retort.

I had a spat with Tiss on Twatter over Shawcross/Ramsey, very childish comments from him, had to block him in the end, and a whole load of Arse fans too. Plus he hates us. 100% Le Tosser.

I was at a sportsmans evening a couple of years ago in our local cricket club, Matt Le Tissier was the guest speaker, he was coming out with the same line then, but a bit more direct.
They played in different roles so I can't see why he needs to do a comparison, an artist and a grafter behind could have played in the same team.

I've been guilty of it in my working life in the past, passing up on an opportunity to test myself because I was happy in my bubble at the time. Nothing wrong with that but just because he was a talented footballer doesn't mean he didn't have the same mindset maybe? Only Le Tissier will know I guess, whatever your opinion though I completely agree with he was an absolute superb talent....

Palmer's fully entitled to defend himself and I'm sure that Southampton had a Palmer or 2. Le Tissier played with the likes of Terry Hurlock and Tommy 'only good enough for the Vale' Widdrington for instance.
One thing cannot be denied, in Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds at the time, Palmer was playing for vastly superior sides than Le Tissier did.
The more pressing question for me is was Le Tissier a bit of a bottler?

By all accounts, even his own in his book Le Tisser was a lazy bastard and a terrible trainer.
I think he bottled it not going to a bigger team.

Are there any other oldies like me, who whenever I see "Carlton Palmer" think of the late Calvin with fond memories? Indeed, one of my favourite players , probably the best versatile player we have ever had, played full back , midfield , centre forward and even in goal once when our goalie got injured, and did a very decent job in all of them.

Teams need both kinds of players, the grafter and the creative force,Palmer and Le Tissier-Glen and Bojan if you will (though Glen is a lot more than a grafter.)

Le Tiss was a wonderful player and really should have won more England caps just like Hudson. When you look at dross like palmer and his like it really does make you wonder what past England managers were thinking. Hodgsons seems to be adopting a similar pattern at times.

Hodgosn has put out England sides with a negative mideset at times however unlike the past I can't tbhink of a single creative player who should have caps,or lots of caps, but hasn't unlike Hudson (& all the other 70's mavericks),Le Tissier & so on. maybe Mark Noble should have had a chance by now but he's not really creative in the same way. the only creative players really, like Barklay, hve been goiven ago by Hodgson. not sure GTaylor woiuld have played him,or Ali or even Shelvey. I like Taylor but he was appaling as England manager & when you thibnk of McLaren & even Capello then I don't understand how anyone can think Hodgson is the 'worst England manager ever'. for the record I think Revie was the worst

The real issue is soccer AM is dog shit. In its heyday it was much watch tv before the days football but is about 10 years out of date.
Helen looks like the old bird in the pub who used to be fit. And they never properly replaced lovejoy who got out at the right time.

Dennis Wise can point to 21 caps on his beer-stocked Formica sideboard, around 15 more than he should have garnered in my opinion, although both Wise and Palmer were excellent team players , with Le Tiss it was difficult to get the most out his undoubtable but isolationist talent

What I meant was MLT has admitted he got away with murder at Southampton. Training as he saw fit. Always carrying some weight A big club like Chelsea and Spurs who were both linked would not have let him get away with that. As such I think his lifestyle and training regime at Southampton was preferable to harder work elsewhere.

I don't understand how people can criticise Le Tissier for not "testing himself at a higher level" but would most likely also criticise Stoke players who want away to bigger clubs.
Was Stanley Matthews less of a player for not playing for successful sides?
