Well despite all the piss taking I'm about to get for saying this..I went to church this morning with the younger children. And a very fine service it was too.
Hopefully my kids will have left with a bit of morality and obligation towards others instilled in them.
Hopefully.

I have no faith at all but went through the catholic meat grinder . Organised religion over the past 1000 years has largely shaped how we live our lives today .

Over the years I went along when she had any solo parts but I can't say I enjoyed any aspect of the services. I would say however that it is of benefit to the kids for the reasons you've stated.

Dr Johnson once said that Religion was a bit like antibiotics given to you by the Doctor. Swallow them whole and they might do you some good..start to chew them and you will immediately spit them out. That's my view of Religion. But I know quite a few people who have suffered bereavements who have been helped greatly by their belief in God. Who am I to deny them there Faith if it helps them? The problems come when Religion is in the hands of fanatics. People who will use Religion to justify committing the most appalling crimes. Crime has nothing to do with Religion. Sermon over.

My folks both had very strong faith , they both died from terminal illness and were very cheerful even as they approached the last days of their lives . This came from the belief that they were going on to eternal life . Who am I to deny them that comfort , it's something I won't have

That's the way I see it. That's what Life Everlasting means to me. That's why I've always tried to instil a bit of morality and social obligation into my kids. Because I'm a selfish bastard.

Although I stopped going to church regularly when I was 13 I still occasionally take the children. Everyone there is well behaved and polite and that in itself is a good example.

Does easter count as Jesus birthday It's his death and resurrection, so I'm told. To be fair it was either one or the other if you didn't know.

Well despite all the piss taking I'm about to get for saying this..I went to church this morning with the younger children. And a very fine service it was too. Hopefully my kids will have left with a bit of morality and obligation towards others instilled in them. Hopefully. I don't go to church because I'm an atheist. Also, whilst I admit that there are worse places to take children (such as Old Trafford), I can't think of many that claim to be our moral arbiters and the ultimate authority on truth and justice, yet preach that sadistic child rapists, torturers and murderers will go to heaven (if they ONLY accept Jesus as their saviour) whilst innocent men, women and children, who were slaughtered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz, will burn in hell for eternity. Not really my idea of justice and morality and certainly NOT the lesson of morality I'll be trying to instill in my child. Regarding obligation, I try my best to impart to my child her obligations to think critically and rationally, to be honest and kind, respect those who have earned it and, most importantly of all, to support Stoke City unquestioningly and blindly. I do not consider it her duty/obligation to treat men and (very recently) women 'of the cloth' as better than her, more moral than her or in any way more qualified than her to counsel the bereaved, administer advice on marriage or speak on behalf of the community on TV after the tragic death of a family in a house fire (for example). I believe that a sense of duty to one's family, friends and neighbours, to one's community, to one's country and to the whole world in general can be better fostered in an environment where she is demonstrably loved and cared about. It is not to be found in a god who DEMANDS obligation, who DEMANDS love and who will torture you forever in the unquenchable fires of hell if you don't believe in him simply because he is invisible, lives in the sky and has not provided one single, scientifically verifiable proof of his own existence.
