Great piece - really shows what commitment and hard work can do. He's come a long way and is getting his deserved recognition now

A great insight into the man and what he has achieved from humble beginnings. He is a bit of an enigma, infuriating us with his supposedly lack of skill during his early days at Stoke but with a great engine. Stokies were divided in their support for him but I believe he has earned a great deal of credit by sticking to his strengths and gradually enhancing his reputation as a valuable member of the Stoke and Ireland teams. A credit to the man

"It was a different world from Dublin’s Aviva Stadium – or, for that matter, Stoke’s smart Clayton Wood training ground, where he sits sipping from a cup of green tea" I didn't realise he was that tough. I tried green tea once. Only managed two sips & the rest went down the sink

A credit to the man I think actually when he first arrived he did show some moments of magic (the wonder goal against Chelsea starting from the halfway line with a mazy run past Luiz & Terry for example). Hughes seems to have realised he is better in and out of the side to give him a rest rather than letting him run himself into the ground and become jaded

Yes he did show himself to be a skilful player in short bursts but he was credited more as being a hard worker for the team who was considered to be rarely in the right place at the right time when in front of goal. This is not a criticism, just an observation

I remember 10 years ago (and more) being chuffed to bits if we got even 1 international call up in our squad. Look at us now. Noone makes me prouder to be a Stokie than Jon. Ireland's most respected player. Like O'Neill says he epitomises a certain spirit that is very close to the heart of what really matters in football. I hope he stays on with us when his playing career is over. What a great influence to have around the club especially the academy.

A good article, hope his daughter is all OK now.
Sounds like he wants to stay on and work with the academy in some role, which would be great.

Some may hate it but Walters will surely go down as a Stoke legend for everything he's done here.

I know a lot of people don't rate Walters but he gives everything on the pitch. It's his determination that impresses me.

It does sound as if he might be considering a coaching career, doesn't it - I wonder if he has started taking his badges yet? He's at the point in his playing career where many players have started down the coaching road. I reckon he'd probably make a decent coach and possibly a better manager. His strengths might not lie on the technical side of the game but on the motivational and man management side. Plenty of good managers seem to be successful by leaving the bulk of the technical coaching to their staff and concentrating on the motivational and man management aspects of the job.

His goals at Wembley ensured legendosity, since then he's proved people (including me) wrong time and again. Agree that he is best used intermittently these days.

I love players like Walters who maximise their ability by hard work and effort. You can't ask more of a player and with the likes of Walters you are guaranteed it.

My first thoughts of Jon were it was like watching a dog chase a ballon , but he's proved me wrong and it shows what a great player and team player he is, yes he has some crap games but so do 20 million pound players , but like whelan when you look at the money he cost to buy he's an absolute steal , and he's now part of the the stoke city DNA

Love SJW and always have. He's our very own Winston Churchill. Never beaten, never down, inspirational and full of guts. Lose a battle, yes, but never lose a war. We need players like SJW in English football. When the going get's tough, the tough get going. SJW is one of the tough.

We should definitely offer Walters a role in our setup after his playing days are over.
So much in football is less about raw talent and more about having the right mental attitude. Walters is the living proof of this and clearly has a desire to pass on his insights to the next generation... surely we can use him for our academy lads?

Definitely one of Pulis's best ever signings. I like players who, whether it's their day or not, give nothing but their best every time they play, and nobody gives more than Walters. That was a great read. It should be required reading for some of the 'top' pros.
