So we all know neither Shaq or Arnie are out and out wingers, and I'm all for the interchanging 3 behind the striker drifting in and out of their position. However, we depend mainly, if not completely on our fullbacks to provide width and make things happen outwide in the final third but non of our fullbacks can cross for love nor money. Whether we change the system playing with wingers with chalk on their boots I don't know but something does need to change.

We still need a goalscoring striker.

Diouf didn't have a great game but our play is so slow and laboured I don't think anyone would have much of an opportunity.

The frustrating thing was that the manager didn't spot it.
When we got that goal back all the momentum was with us for a moment, but our possession turned to nothing because we just kept trying to play through the middle.
Afellay has been outstanding over the last three months but when he shifted to the right he spent far too much time in the middle. There was plenty of space on the right, but only Cameron to exploit it and nobody seemed to want to pass to him. The one time we did get in behind them was when Afellay came wide and Cameron played a nice ball through inside the fullback.
I don't know why Sparky didn't either tell Afellay to stay wider or just take him off and stick SJW on the wing. It was obviously not working.

Our attacking play in these sorts of games is fucking shit.
Powder puff crap with no direction. Players all cutting inside every time then passing sideways or backwards so as not to take responsibility. It ends with a shit up and under in to the box from deep.
we need a winger who takes on his full back and a striker who finishes.
I am happy with this season but it infuriates me to see a good group of players making the same mistakes in these games.
I'm not even going to mention set pieces

We're 9th in the premier league, losing narrowly today against a very competent team with a good manger. Your a doom mongerer and you need to get a grip on yourself. Stop moaning and realise we have a strong team with a developing squad and will get stronger each season. What do you want? SGS

I think we really miss Johnson at the moment he offers us real width out wide and can actually cross a ball. We definitely look out of ideas when he's not playing.
I thought Pieters was awful today. There were at least 3 times Arnie was on the ball with miles of space ahead of him and there was no thought from Pieters to overlap him into the space. The less we talk about his crossing ability the better really. I hate to say this but we are quickly moving on from Pieters he has to up his game if he's to continue being with us

We lack a real wideman with pace n our squad who can go outside rather than cut in like skak and Arnie.

you could have put the most potent striker in his prime in that team today and he would not have scored....our full backs lacked the space/skill what ever you want to call it to get forward and put the ball in to the box, our only real threats in front of goal were out wide trying to get the ball in to the danger zones......
onwards and upwards

Southampton did a good job on us tactically and exposed our weak spots. We don't have a central striker who can impose himself on central defenders when they sit deep. pelle always does well against us, holds the ball up, brings people into play and is a real threat in the air. I like Diouf but games like yesterday don't suit him, he needs the space we get awy from home. We do miss Johnson going forward and eric is offering little in an attackings sense but the key for me is midfield,w e have good palyers but the wrong balance. Whelan is a spare part in games like yesterday, Imbula wants to paly deep but isn't a defensive midfielder so we had him and Whelan next to each other. With Imbula on the ball so much, Bojan was only getting slow ball. I would be tempted to bring Shaq into the Number 10 role, have Afellay wide, play Diouf away and Joselu at home to see what they might offer next season and tell Bojan to have a holiday and come back ealry next season - he looks short of pace and energy.

Our lack of width is proving a major concern. As has already been said, we really do need one or two wingers in the summer who are more direct and willing to take on their full back on the outside and get crosses over rather than persistently cutting inside. Victor Moses was excellent for us in that respect and we need another winger of that mould I think as an alternative to Shaq and Arnie.
Crosses per game:
17. Swansea - 19 18. Stoke - 19 19. Watford - 18 20. Sunderland - 16
We are averaging 19 crosses per game, only two teams are worse off than this in the Premier League. It needs to improve.
