Possibly one of the most ridiculous pieces of defending I've ever seen.

He's all over the place, up against some tall bloke up front for psg, not sure who it is but he seems familiar.
This time woy can't replace him with Ryan to save him. Sorry Gary, crack on.

Costa & Fabregas both got away with trademark nasty, snide fouls within a minute of each other, both should have been yellows. Then Rabiot breathes on Costa & gets a yellow card for his trouble. Ref is as big a homer as I've ever seen.

The luckiest defender in the world is Cahill. An absolutely woeful defender, yet plays in the Champions League and is first choice centre half for England.

I watched some of the Bolton semi the other day, sad bastard that I am. I'd forgotten he was still playing for them. He was absolutely fucking gash then as well. Kenwynne took him to the cleaners and should have had a hattrick Ryan on the other hand was imperious. PS not to ignite a pro/anti debate but we play so much better football now. Even compared to that game.

Gary Cahill is wank.
I've seen him destroyed by several Stoke City players including Mama Sidibe (away v Sheffield United), Ricardo Fuller, James Beattie, Dave "fucking" Kitson, Kenwyne Jones and Jon Walters. Not to mention several players on international duty...luminaries such as Kenny Miller for example.
He has an amazing ability to completely disappear when the going gets tough, and is a master at turning his back instead of "taking one for the team".
This man has captained his country and is most definitely the luckiest man in Football right now.

He made mistakes for Suarez and Balotelli's winning goals in the world cup, and somehow seemed to escape criticism. Quite a few media outlets actually had him down as our stand out performer for the competition. I also remember him being praised for his 'heroic' performance in the Champions league final a few years back, despite Mario Gomez turning him 3/4 times to create clear cut chances (which he missed). It genuinely amazes me how much the guy has "achieved" in his career.

Plays the odd decent ball out of defence and chips in with the odd goal, and his many deficiencies are all forgotten about because of this.....

It's pretty obvious that Cahill wasn't to blame for last nights fuck up. It was Ryan Shawcross. Ryan wasn't tight enough on Ibra. Ryan was caught napping again, probably on the sofa with the TV on, no concentration on the football, all the while Ibra was running pixel rings around his defensive partner Cahill 180 miles away.
Sort it Ryan.

Completely useless.
So glad we have Ryan.

Gary Cahill is far from shit imo, him & shawcross together for us in the league would be a quality pairing. I'd like to think if it was possible we'd be well in for him in the summer

We all remember it was Cahill who left Shawcross to look after Ibrahimovic on his debut, the fucking coward. He proved last night he couldn't deal with Zlatan.

Either that or he is actually quite good and this is just another hand bagging thread trying to pick holes in anyone who is chosen ahead of Ryan for England.

I've always said he's crap and vastly overrated. A rich mans Leon cort in my opinion. Soft as shit and better in the opponents box than his own. That has nothing to do with Ryan Shawcross and his plight in regard recognition with the national team.

If Wollscheid or Cameron had defended like Cahill for their first goal, we would have at least 100 posts on it from certain posters on here.

The fact is that the current crop of England centre backs are on a par with Shawcross. At best you could argue that Cahill and Smalling are marginally better, whereas players like Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell and King were clearly better. The problem is that Stones remains unproven and nobody knows what Phil Jones is for, so asking why Shawcross isn't even given a chance is perfectly reasonable.

If Shawcross decides to play for Wales, I'd still say Cahill is woeful. He's bloody awful in fact. Yes he can play a nice pass, yes he looks the part, but he can't defend. Judged on positioning, heading, tackling, he's not even PL standard in my opinion.

If he's been selected for England he should be capable of doing the job without Cahill babysitting him. He had an unfortunate debut in as a sub against a world class player, that's not cahill's fault is It? He had to get into the pace of the game quickly and it didn't happen, hidgson is too short sighted to see that though because he doesn't play for man utd

It's nothing to do with a comparison with Ryan Shawcross because he simply doesn't compare. He's a woeful defender and Ryan isn't. He's a good header of the ball and good in the opposition box but in his own box his defending, particularly his positioning is dreadful as he demonstrated perfectly last night. The only times he seems to play well is when alongside a dominant and vocal centre half a la Terry who will tell him where to stand, who to mark and generally what to do. For that reason I think he would actually make a good partner for Ryan now as Ryan has developed into that dominant, vocal centre half. Unfortunately we're not going to see it either for Stoke or England.
