My boy's PC has packed in, and I cannot even get it into recovery mode. I've spent long enough on it, and it's now time to take it to someone. I'm obviously not going to take it to PC world, but I'd welcome some suggestions as to where else I can take it to get it fixed, or at least recover the data on it.

Unnecessarily provocative thread title. Nearly had a small cry when I saw it.

If he's into his teen years, you may not want to recover any of the data

He's not quite old enough to understand why girls exist, and is far more interested in Minecraft. I suspect he's downloaded some kind of Mod that's destroyed his PC.

What exactly is the problem? When it boots up what happens? It's running Windows 10, and it starts to perform a repair, then hangs.

You'll need a large screwdriver and a hammer.Turn your PC on and wait a few seconds, then smash the thing with the hammer. When it's completely destroyed sit back and drink the screwdriver.

If its on your computer and it previously had windows 8 you dont need a copy of 10. You just go to recovery and choose the option to reset

I found the problem. It's a computer that's a bit like Trigger's Broom, it's been updated, many times, over the years and is a mix of old and quite new kit. It has an old second hard drive that was connected, but not mapped properly. I just unplugged it, and the PC booted up, just fine.
Thanks for the suggestions and help!

So it's 'soft bricked' then (as in failing to boot). Anything like that IS repairable with a combination of recovery disks, chkdsk tools etc.

From what you say it sounds like the "Boot Priority" in bios is set to look at the old drive with no OS on it before the newer one with win 10 installed on it .
Just enter bios and set boot priority correctly.
I always have dvd rom as first boot device. Hard drive with os on as number 2
don't forget to "Save changes and exit" when done or it will revert back when you reboot.
