In a quandary the daughter has a 2007 Ford fiesta 2007 1.4 Zetec thats going through oil and making a ticking noise when idling. Mate thinks its not a lifter sticking but more a piston problem. Now the quandary do i try and get a recon (heard some shocking stories) or can it be repaired.
Gonna try a oil and filter change first but not confident.Car is decent otherwise and seem to hold their price when working perfectly.Any advice

Our daughter had similar problem with her first car (Corsa), took it to the garage and he showed her the problem by wiping the dipstick across his finger and the oil had fine bits of metal in it - grinding metal. She got rid pronto

What's the performance like?
I'm asking because some cars/engines do naturally go through oil a lot more than others.
I have a Peugeot 207 1.4 sport and i have to top the oil up at least twice a year and it always has made a ticking noise since I had it 5 years ago,but the car has never let me down and I've done about 60,000 miles in it.

Sounds like the dangle sprocket. It's fucked. Where do I send the invoice?

In technical parlance ....the fucking fucker is fucking fucked. Seriously though the ticking noise could be small end bearing worn or camshaft bearing. Neither would necessarily explain oil consumption though. When you say a litre a month how many miles is this. Check specs to see what maximum is. Edit: if you google it there's loads of discussion regarding 1.4 Zetec engine. Seems 1 litre per 1500 miles isn't seen as excessive also ticking noise could be cracked piston oil scraper ring which would also account for higher oil consumption. Good luck hope it isn't an expensive fix for your daughter.
