I don't think Villa will break 30 points. The other candidates (Sunderland, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Norwich and maybe Swansea and West Brom) are way more difficult to call in terms of the safety net - I'd say 38 should suffice, although with the midtable being so clogged up, you do wonder what could happen to some clubs (Palace as an example) who keep a dreadful run of form going and going.
Strange season

I think this sesson will be pretty normal at the arse end of the table with 40 points being the target for survival. The biggest puzzle is who will be poor enough to join Villa in the battle to lose out on next seasons financial jackpot.

Even Gary Brooke wouldn't have missed that. Can someone let me know if my recollection here is correct? I have a memory, though I don't know if its real as sometimes it seems to pop up in a nightmare, of standing at the front of the boothend end as a small child, against Ipswich I think, and a ball bounced nicely for a little blond winger playing for us, about two yards off the goal line, and he balooned it miles over the bar. I then turn to my dad in tears, asking him what happened. Was that Gary Brooke and did it really happen?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but why is it that when ever I read certain posts, there are threads that have nothing to do with the original post. Anyway back to original post, I think 42 may be required, but will all the current bottom three be able to get to that, it seems a lot. I will be glad when we get 9 more points.

Before slamming our current players, I try to remind myself how shit some of our previous players were. It doesn't work, obviously, but when trying it, Gary Brooke is a player I often think about along with Neville Southall, O'neil Donaldson and Steven taffe.

It was an horrific game that ended 0-0 if I remember and if ever a game deserved a sitter like that.. I recall Keith Scott missing one similar. .possibly against Portsmouth but at the Stoke End.. And folk constantly moan that Shaq isn't firing...

It could be a record high.
If Villa stay as shit as they have been, and the struggling clubs keep on grinding out results against the traditional big teams then of course it'll be a high points tally.

None of the bottom four clubs are currently averaging a point a game. What makes anyone think that's going to change?
We have this debate most seasons don't we, and in the end it's usually 36-37 points which keeps a club up.

Strange season Well, looking as things stand Palace are only 1 point behind us
The good thing is ideally every single one of our home games are winnable; in order Villa, Newcastle, Southampton, Swansea, Tottenham, Sunderland, West Ham. Tottenham on paper looks the hardest but the others should get us 10 points at least from the total of 21 for grabs. That would get us to 43 and more than safe
saying that all these teams will fight hard, just look at Sunderland today. Villa for me, are still in with a chance, however slim.
Im expecting very very little from the remaining away games of Bournemouth, Chelsea, Watford, Liverpool, Man City, Crystal Palace. Any points will be a bonus and draws at least take 2 points off them.
Still 43 looks very achievable on paper but after today though..
A win at Bournemouth would so lift morale and take the pressure off the Villa game.
Should we lose on the south coast and then fail to take max points from Villa, then I think it will be nervous times

^Spot on. I think we'll quite easily acheive safety, but part of me thinks we'll finish 10th/11th, which will be mildly disappointing...

Based on the remaining fixture list and how each team has performed over the season so far it looks like being a typical relegation safety line. Attachment DeletedMost likely final points total for the final relegation spot currently stands at 35 points. So in that case 35 points could keep you up on goal difference. Only about a 1 in 50 chance that the 18th placed team gets 40 or more points.
