...It was on BBC2 last night, anyone give it a watch? I thought it was brilliant, one of the best bits of TV I've seen for quite a while. A quick overview for anyone who didn't, it had some military/Government types sat around acting out what could happen if Russia invaded a NATO country, all the decisions that'd need to be taken & such like, then playing out how Russia might react, what we'd then do in return etc... Give it a watch on iPlayer, you wont regret it!

I watched that. Thought provoking for supporters of Trident I'd have said. The muddy waters around tactical and strategic use, first and second strike capability, military and non military targetting etc. And Russian normalisation in doctrine of tactical nukes. To be an effective deterrent there needs to be more clarity than that.
For me, Trident is as much about maintaining the UK's position (as a US ally*) on the UN Security Council as it is a military option. Financing a nuclear deterrent AT THE EXPENSE of adequate conventional forces is no real defence IMHO.
*or puppet? Take your pick. :-) though if that's correct the US should pay for it!
... sorry all a bit rushed.

Thought provoking is exactly what it was.
Do you reckon they got it all right, I don't mean the decisions they made, more how it all panned out, or do you think it was a bit stereotypical? Without wanting to give it all away for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the way certain Russian & American things for example panned out.

Sorry, I've got me hands full just at the mo DC. :-) I thought it was pretty realistic overall and it highlighted the weakness of Britains position in relation to the two superpowers. We were almost inconsequential as to how events panned out. Whether the Russians (or Americans) would have been quite that reckless was perhaps a bit much but what it brought home for me was how things could easily spiral out of control and how the clarity required for deterrence to work might not exist in real life. The final decision the Brit planners had to make was pretty bleak wasn't it? There was a good point made earlier about needing to give Putin a realistic way out of the situation. I thought they could have made better decisions then. There are hundreds of scenarios that could play out and things aren't anywhere near as simple or black and white as we are led to believe.
