To teach Muslim women in the UK to learn to converse in English, money well spent in these times of austerity or not ?

On first thoughts it sounds ok. We've got lots of people who've moved here and are gonna stick around and we should be able to understand each other. Tbh I think the real battle will be won or lost on the playground - if the kids feel British and mix in then we've got a good future.
One of the big worries I guess is the problems in how conservative muslims have some different ideas and values to the traditional British values. Educated, empowered women is bad news for conservative religious folk.

Apparently some according to the BBC have been here for over 40 years and are still unable to speak a word of English, astonishing if true how on earth could that happen in a free open society such as the UK ?

Why would they start now. 20 million or not I know a family where the wife/mother has been around for years and she's worked hard to understand english but she still struggles with some topics. She's basically not allowed out of the house without a bloke from the family unless it's to take the kids to school or go to the local shop to buy stuff for tea. She was allowed out to go to some classes when she first arrived and really wants to do more. The main problem is coming up with a way to persuade the guy to let her out.

That is appalling how will she ever integrate into our society ?, I take it that this an isolated case and not the norm. within the Muslim community in our country.

So these people for whatever reason will never integrate into the host society, it needs to be addressed in the interests of all in our society to alleviate issue with alienation.

There has to be a desire to do so though. And I'm note sure there is (on a large scale)

There has to be a desire to do so though. And I'm note sure there is (on a large scale) This is only one case, but she definitely wants to learn and although she hasn't said it explicitly, I'm pretty sure she wants to get out and about and join in life. It's just a matter of persuading the husband and maybe cash for classes might do that. I think it'll be harder to persuade her daughter to accept a life like hers, she's only little but with friends and teachers outside the family I think she's in a better position. They've gor a younger kid and the dad doesn't want to send him to school until he's 8 because that's when formal muslim teaching begins. This one example is partly why I think outreach is important but so are schools. Conservative religious extremists are mostly blokes who feel some of their power through controlling their family. Do stuff that teaches and empowers women and children and lets them taste freedom. Conservative religious folk hate that - that's one reason they're scared of schools, critical thinking etc.
