How weird this thread should appear? Jack Butland was at the Orlando v Toronto NBA game at the O2 last night, was interviewed, seemed to know his basketball, then moaned that the game was going into overtime and he had to get home for training today!!!

"I've got a good idea about what to start a thread about,I'll ask a load of Stoke fans about which players would play what positions in a wank American sport that nobody gives a flying fuck about". One of the strangest thread subjects since thread subjects began way back in the 90's.

It's one of the few sports (along with curling and dressage) that I simply have no interest in. Very tall men throwing a bouncy ball into a small basket and they aren't allowed to tackle! What is the point of a sport where you pretty much needn't bother if you're under 6'9? Robert Ludlow (I think that was his name) was so badly handicapped he found it difficult to walk never mind run and jump but he still got signed up for one of the top teams. Why? Because he was nearly 9 ft tall; in fact the tallest man that ever lived. Says it all really.

Obviously it is important to be tall but many shorter people have succeeded playing in the NBA. One example is Nate Robinson who was 5'8" and played a very long career in the NBA, he even won a dunk contest at one point. I have time for it, because I think it reminds me at some point of football. Players need to be smart as well as physically fit. I think if you watch a few games here and there you'll be able to tell how much skill it actually takes to play basketball. Also look out for Steph Curry the man is magical.

There's even a player at about 5'8 who is a decent player. I'm not American, but I do enjoy watching the sport, it's exciting and has some really incredible athletes. It's not always the case of "He's big so he is going to make it in Basketball" but fair enough, everyones entitled to their own opinion.

Basketball is the biggest load of old toss going. We score, you score, we score, you...... To be fair, I used to think the same until I lived in LA for a bit and got into the sport. The fact that both teams score fairly regularly means "stops" become just as important as scoring. Teams build up momentum and can go on a run and have it all fall apart by a tactical switch. I agree with other comments on this thread that it is dominated by freakishly tall people, which ultimately means that if you're normal height then you'd better be massively talented or you won't get anywhere near professional. The average height is 6ft 6in (although the shortest player ever to play in the NBA was 5ft 3in - Muggsy Bogues).

I know, you have to be an athlete. I get that. it's just that it's extremely useful if you're a very tall athlete. I understand it's very difficult to throw a bouncy ball into a small basket but really, is that a skill any one should master? I knew someone who was very good at firing table-tennis balls out of their fanny. It took practice and dedication but it hardly merits an Olympic gold medal.

No! By that logic anyone who's good at throwing failed novels (ie me)in the waste paper basket should win gold. There are some things (like footy or running really fast) that deserve respect and then there are 'pursuits' like measuring how long you can hold your breath or how fast you can eat 50 bananas, that should simply be respected for their 'better-than anyone-else-ness' but shouldn't be regaled as in some way 'important'. Throwing bouncy balls in hoops is admirable (because it's difficult) but so is hitting my Mother-in-Law with a snow ball right between the eyes just as she turns round fumbling with the front door key to check if I'm aiming . Not many would find 'hitting your Mother-in-Law with a snow ball' prime time TV although, to be honest, I reckon it would be far more entertaining then basketball. Try to imagine winning Olympic gold in 'how-high-teenage-boys-can piss-up a-wall' and stuffing Arsenal 5-0. Some sports are more worth playing than others.

Well, I just think a sport that relies so heavily on a genetic predisposition for being freakishly tall is not one to get excited about. By the way, are you actually suggesting that basketball is as good as footy?

Basketball is actually a fantastic sport although footy will always be my favourite. I do agree that it is by design less accessible than footy given that unless you are immensely talented, you need to be freakishly tall to become professional. Crouchy is about average height in the NBA.

Just like in football heights can suit a position, being tall is an advantage if you're skilled.

I get what you're saying but basketball is not the same thing as throwing snowballs, it's one of the most popular games in the world and is played by hundreds of millions of people across every continent on Earth.
