Butland - 7 - Solid for the most part, bit shaky from that back pass but shouldn't have had to deal with a 50 yard back pass to the corner really.
Johnson - 7 - Solid defensively, okay going forward. Shawcross - 7 - Kept a strong Mbokani relatively quiet. Wollscheid - 7 - Same as Ryan. Pieters - 6 - Couple of good balls into the box, couple of poor ones and a few mistakes.
Whelan - 7 - Sound passing and kept us ticking over. Afellay - 7 - tried his best to bring the ball forward as often as possible.
Walters - 8 - Strong, kept the ball well and a well taken goal. Bojan - 6 - Tried his best to create, not his game against a tough 8 man defence. Arnautovic - 8 - Kept creating throughout, looked a constant threat and his movement made space in a tight game.
Joselu - 8 - Lovely finish and his hold up/link up play was great as always
Odemwingie - 6.5 - looked lively, constant movement got him into some good areas. V. Ginkel - 6 - seems he has a good passing range, rarely lost the ball. Crouch - 7 - Seemed very up for it and got into some really good positions for his shots.

Same match? "Jonathan Walters opened the scoring before Gary O'Neil saw red on the half hour mark".

Butland 6 - one good save but distribution poor Johnson 8 - solid with some good crosses Shawcross 6 - out of position many times Wollscheid 7 - relatively trouble free night Pieters 7 - some sloppiness but a good 2nd half Whelan 7 - reasonable performance Affelay 9 - ran the show Bojan 4 - rubbish Arnautovic 7 - great assist and ball control Walters 8 - ran his dangly bits off as usual with a goal Joselu 7 - great goal but not too much else
Crouch put himself about well. Nothing of note for Odemwingie or Van Ginkel.

Arnie wasn't at his best (both wide players had this strange reluctance to actually play out wide) but his assist for the first was genius and he got into good positions. Should have buried at least one of the two chances Joselu gift-wrapped for him first half. The first was a good save from the keeper. I wouldn't really criticise a player for that when others (Bojan, Affelay, Walters et al.) all at various times couldn't even get shots on target under little or no pressure. At least Arnie tested the keeper! It was good movement and a great ball to create the chance too.

Arnie had our only meaningful shot on goal first half. He also played an outstanding through ball for Joselu which should've resulted in a goal (he missed the target). It was his brilliance that created the opener for Walters too. It might not have been his best game but he was far from poor. He was our most creative player on the night. Which he missed if that was Diouf his head would be on a stick. He hit the target and it needed a good stop from the keeper. I'd prefer to criticise others who get closer to row Z than test the keeper when getting shots away. Bojan, Affelay and Walters were all guilty.

I'd say that for the other chance he had first half as well. That first one was an excellent move though, great play from him and Joselu.

Bojan's definitely been off his game the last couple of weeks. He has a delicate persona - I wonder if he's distracted by all the transfer hype?

Joselu should have scored and didn't even hit the target. Affelay and Bojan both hit row Z with a couple of pathetic efforts. Walters had a great chance from the edge of the box first half and missed the target. That's a much bigger sin than Arnie's.

I thought Joselu's chance was more difficult to be honest. Was definitely a half-decent chance though. I'm not particularly saying Arnie committed any sins, I just thought he should've scored, that's all. No biggie.

Is it just me that thinks Pieters has been very poor since he signed his new contract?Hopefully just a blip because prior to this he's been excellent Said exactly the same thing last night, Pieters HAS been awful since he got the new contract, although he did improve second half last night. It's often said that players go into relax mode when they have a bit of longer term security. He needs to get his backside back in gear and get back to his pre contract form. And, as another poster highlighted, getting rid of that stupid pony tail might help. Makes him look a right knob. Just like the guy that plays in front of him. Short back and sides all round, I reckon
