Kate Bush in Brum1979, she was feckin ace and Ian Dury and the Blockheads at the Vic Hall up Hanley duck also stand out. More recently Squeeze in 2014, stood in the mosh pit singing me 'ed of (as did the entire crowd) to Cool for Cats and a few other Squeeze classics. I was at the Blockheads got on stage for 'Fuckin Ada' at the end. Brill gig. Think the support was Basement 5 punky reggae band?

Mott the Hoople Vic Hall 1971 (pre Bowie) Nobody here or in the US wanted to be on the same bill as that band. Did Queen support Mott that year or was it a couple of years later? No mate it was later as pretzel says, after "All the Young Dudes". I was at that one as well. I think I saw Mott 4 times at the Vic. That '71 gig was the best gig I've ever been to. Remains the loudest as well. They were lethal live. Couldn't sell albums though and were about to split before Bowie's intervention. I remember Queen were pretty good at the later gig and it was obvious at the time that they were going to be big. I'm struggling to recall many of the other bands that supported Mott back then.* *EDIT. - maybe Paul Rodger's band "Peace"? Max Wall was on the bill one time.

Sold our programmes from the gig last year, still have a poster - happy days.

mostly a hazy memory from 30 odd years ago... The Clash - wolverhampton civic hall The Chameleons - Manchester free trade hall The pogues - telford somewhere or other - oakengates ? Pop will eat itself - leicester de monfort hall I think more recently... New Order - Jodrell bank Doves - Delamere forest Saw New Order at Jodrell Bank a couple of years ago with all those other Manc bands..brilliant. The Pogues too. 'Rum Sodomy & The Lash' Tour Viccy Hall 1986. The same year The Cramps PIL & Killing Joke played there. (Saw New Order Viccy Hall 1983 Shite !! Bauhaus were much better Sky's Gone Out Tour) Last live band I saw was Killing Joke at Manchester Ritz November last year. Still brilliant after 30 years !! Saw Bauhaus twice in fairly quick succession in the early 80's at the Vic. Both were brilliant and/but fairly violent affairs. I received a minor mauling from a group of Scouse {Woolston Crew} Goths at the first one, better prepared second time around. I think Peter Murphy had skeletal body paint, illuminated himself with a flourescent tube and kicked off with an extra eerie 'Spy in the Cab.' Bauhaus were theatre. Enhanced by the Vic's atmosphere. The Victoria Hall was mint. One of the finest bands/shows I saw there was Kid Creole & the Coconuts. I was a reluctant attender, but they were fantastic, sure they had a seascape and moveable ship on stage! {unless I've over romanticised it in me bonce.} Looks like 1986 was a vintage year at the Vic. I was living away from Stoke then and explains why I wanna at Cramps, PiL, KJ, sadly. I was at the 1983 New Order Vic gig, more interesting for James in support as I recall. New Order were often patchy live but in 83 their gigs were like a 'happening' of sorts. Often with a fledgling Happy Mondays in support. Loads of posing and posturing amongst the cliques.

Bauhaus did play the Viccy Hall late 1982 Sky's Gone Out Tour and easter 1983 I think..Burning From The Inside Tour.(She's In Parties..Kick in The Eye..Dark Entries & Spy Passion of Lovers etc). The definitive Goth Band..think Brilliant were on with them in 1983 ? Interestingly enough David Bowie asked Bauhaus to be in his film The Hunger in 1983. And he later said that he thought there work was influential. As you say pure theatre. Especially Murphy rising in his coffin to Bela Lugosi's Dead. I've always loved The Fall..they've been going for 40 years and are probably the most original and creative rock band ever. But I'm also getting rather fond of Killing Joke. First saw them in 1981..and the first track they played was Butcher then Tension..blew me away. Seen The Fall & Killing Joke loads of times. Never thought owd Jaz Coleman would still be at it..but there you go..fantastic live. Remember seeing The Smiths too down at Leek Road North Staffs Poly (as it was). 1982..utter rubbish!! In 1985 they played the Viccy Hall and were fantastic.

A few stand outs for me
The Real People - Keele Uni 1991 (huge Real People fan, and they'll stop and have a pint or three with you after the set!), was their last tour before they parted company with their record label (they released the album they recorded for the tour a couple of years ago - Marshmellow Lane). Saw them again in Hanley. Top band, top guys, excellent live.
The Ruby Tuesdays (aka The YaYas) - saw them at the Wheatsheaf in Stoke. Local lads but they were fantastic live. Sometime late 80's early 90's I think
Marc Almond - Birmingham (some nightclub, can't remember which one). Exceptional live but very odd experience; I remember a member of the audience (who obviously wasn't a Marc Almond fan) who must have been a very drunk nightclub dweller, in between two tracks decided to shout some abuse to Marc. Not particularly wise when surround by Goths. I remember him being rescued by security staff and ushered out of the nearest exit. A great set though covering a little of his Soft Cell and Marc and the Mambas days, and some of his then current stuff.
Ocean Colour Scene - Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham. I got dragged to a fair/community event specifically to see these guys. It was before they made it big, but were very well known around Brum. Superb set, even when Craddock's electric guitar strings broke and he did a impromptu acoustic performance of a track that someone from the audience asked for, whilst his guitar got restrung!
Milltown Brothers - Frog Street, NUL. I actually saw these twice, the first time was at a club in Frog Street. There was only 5 or 6 of us in the place, so we got a very personal performance by the band! Was a very good performance. Saw them again a year later at the Wheatsheaf in Stoke - by contrast it was packed to the rafters, wasn't quite the same.
I'd have loved to have seen Peter Murphy, Bauhaus or Love and Rockets live, but never had the chance. I know Bauhaus toured again around 2006 but certainly not locally (with a new album Go Away White released in 2008), I hope they do another reunion tour.

James Brown did an outdoor VIP show at niteclub here in Toronto many many years ago. Proper VIP event, but I thought we'd give it a shot amd get dressed up and try and get in. He was performing on the front area of the club outside, facing the street with a barrier at the sidewalk. Anyway I bring my gorlfriend at the time and her gorgeuos friend as well, so I got two girls on my arm as we rock up to the bouncer. He asked us to seperate and frisked the two girls and let them in. Then smiled and said sorry buddy, and closed the rope! The girls left me stood there on the sidewalk alone!! He was fucking amazing though, my god. Too bad I had to stand on the sidewalk like a wally though. Women eh?

A few off the top of my head
A hawk and a hacksaw at the bush hall in London Yeah yeah yeahs at the Sheffield Leadmill around the time of their second LP Fiery Furnaces at Cargo in London - incredible that they basically re-write the music for every already elaborate track. Tiny Ruins at the grain barge in Bristol - she is a New Zealand based singer with an acoustic band who plays very gentle sounding music, so I was a bit unsure about going to see her as it's more the sort of stuff you listen to on headphones whilst alone. Turned out to be one of the most captivating performances I've ever seen. On the other side of the spectrum, any of 3 or 4 times I've seen chemical brothers - probably one of the earlier gigs where their back catalogue was a bit smaller and they played bits and bobs off EPs, like "Morning Lemon" and finished with "Private Psychedelic Reel". Another I've seen a few times - The Coral. Tune Yards after her second record - played most of the songs by recording a load of loops at the beginning and then bringing them in and out with pedals which quite a few people do these days, fits her ramshackle style personally.
The one that got away: Missed Iggy Pop at glasto 2007 as I'd taken a half too many happy pills and decided to go somewhere to chill. What sort of person misses Iggy fucking Pop for a sit down and a spliff? What a fucking cunt I am, I should punch myself in the face for it. One of life's greatest regrets.

I will get taken to pieces for this but......
Michael Buble, brilliant showman, surprisingly funny, can sing live, swears a lot (which I really didn't expect and puts a bit of personality on him)
I genuinely enjoyed the concert and would watch him again if I was given the chance!

How a concert is perceived is as much down to the atmosphere generated by the crowd as it is down to how well the artist or group perform on the night.
God knows how many concerts I went to in the early to mid-80s, most of them at the Victoria Hall. Looking back, I wish I'd realised how lucky I was to be able to see some brilliant bands at a time when tickets were £5 a throw until the likes of U2 made going to concerts something you could only afford to do every 6 months rather than every couple of weeks.
Best concert? Gary Numan at Wolverhampton in 2009. Great feeling of watching a fallen star somehow inching his way back up again, and playing to a packed crowd in a buzzing atmosphere.
Worst concerts, for no other reason than the atmosphere was just flat for whatever reason? Teardrop Explodes and A Flock of Seagulls, both early 80s at the Victoria Hall.
Enjoyed watching Slade doing Merry Christmas (on demand) in mid-April in the mid-80s. Gary Glitter's Christmas concert was a hoot too - if I'm allowed to own up to that one.
