I'd like the first one if we dropped Adam and put Bojan No.10 and played Joselu up front

The second one - who's your holding midfielder?

I'm 100% certain that Mark Hughes knows better than anyone on this board what formation too use in Stoke games, what Hughes cannot guarantee though is whether his players will be better on the day than the oppositions and last night our players weren't better and that's why we lost.

Sorry, shouldn't have been a wise-ass. What's your thinking? Well based on today's performance, I think we really need to be a bit more adventurous in possession. Too many back passes, too many sideways passes. Need to be a bit more direct. Affelay is a good player but he just keeps dropping deeper & deeper throughout the game. In fact even in the game against United & Everton, he was basically a 3rd holding midfield player. This leaves the front 3 completely isolated. Has he ever made a run behind the opposition backline? I don't think so. I think his natural position is a deeper role in midfield. We need someone who will support the from 3 & I think it's fair to say Charlie did a great job for us in that position last season. I'd be tempted to give him another chance. But he also needs to track back so that we aren't outrun in midfield. Cameron doesn't have the creativity to play in the centre of midfield. The 2nd formation is just experimenting. Against defensive teams like Wes Brom & Palace, we don't need to play 2 holding midfield players. Van Ginkel will offer yet another attacking outlet.

Of course, hey I was just asking what you thought about the formations. I'm not suggesting that we necessarily play like that.

You still need balance in your team even against defensive teams. When we dropped the holding midfielder in home games last season we never won these 'winnable' games.

For me it's time to Joselu a regular start up front. Give him a run of games. We need someone who can finish. Could he be the answer? Maybe, methinks. These bit part appearances do not help him in anyway.

I don't think we would get away with playing 13 players for the second formation

I agree with your comments about Afellay but believe that he must have the ability to get into the box and support the front three as he has done it often enough in his career and is only 29 so has plenty of legs still.

If our best players play how they played last night the system is irrelevant. The end result would be a crap performance.
Equally, play to a man as we did against man city, again the system would be irrelevant.
Players performances make systems a success or failure.
