Onn SSN right now punditing the ROI - Bosina game
looks like 'Father Ted's' wearing well. Loved him to bits until he decided to get greedy and snubbed us whilst on the pitch wearing our shirt for pretty much half a season
He left under a cloud which was a pity because, during some of the darker times in our past, he was one of our players with a bit of character
a bit of devilment and helped regain an upward trajectory in our league system
and a hell of a shot on him

Strange but true and yet a bloke I work with - with the same surname, definitely spells it with a C
I stand corrected however

Kav's remarks about our direction as a club were pretty much spot on when you consider Cardiff were investing heavily at the time. It's a shame that he's seen as some kind of hate figure because I do believe he cared about Stoke.

Very well thought of by opposition players seem to remember him making "team of the season" a few times voted for by opposition

Generally took a shit free kick, despite stamping across to the spot indicated by the referee an commandeering the ball.

When he left he followed Hamman's orders and came out with bollox about joining a bigger and better club so he can get picked for Ireland at the World Cup. WELL, when he joined us we were a good second tier team who had recently made the play offs to get the Prem. We started 96-97 well and as soon as Kav arrived we faded. Next season relegated and in the ensuing seasons suffer much shyte including Nuneaton. First season without him we got probloodymoted!!
However we will all be eternally grateful for his open legs.

Surely he was underrated and not overrated? He had a premiership shot for a midfielder, and the overall play of a championship level midfielder; yet we had him in the 3rd tier and he was brilliant every season for us.
I hated him when you left but surely anyone who attended the games during this period knows the quality he had.
The best at volleys I can think of for Stoke in the last 30 years.

How anyone can say he was overrated is beyond me. 1 of the best midfielders I've seen us have in the lower leagues. He was like a good, fit Jamie Redknapp.

Never liked him, sideways Kavanagh we used to call him.A poor man's Ray Wilkins. ...another player I never rated lol.Give the ball to Kavanagh and the move would stop until he decided what to do next .

Kav was a strange player, capable of being bloody brilliant but also of disappearing up his own arse more than often.
My overriding view on him was that when he scored he was invariably very good, when he didn't he was average to poor more often than not (apart from his loan spell where he was awesome without scoring!)
I always liked and rated him though.

He was a cracking player on his day but he'd gone stale with us. The £1m we got represented a good deal for everyone.

Of that era, he and Thorne are probably the only two who could have made it in the Premiership, if luck had gone their way. He was very underrated outside of Stoke-on-Trent. oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/242007/stoke-players-past-cracked-premThis was the thread I started a few months back on this exact topic.

I loved the way he got booed while Cardiff were warming up for the play off semi at the Brit. They were doing runs from one side of the pitch to the other and he got stick from whichever side he was running towards.
He knew what he was saying when he came out with the 'bigger club' comment and he knew it would hurt the supporters. If he did it under orders from Sam Hammam that just makes him an even bigger cunt.

Didn't and still don't get the love in for this man. Overrated. Always struck me as a big headed cunt too. He was actually a nice bloke. He lived in Clayton for a while just off Seabridge Lane and I used to see him and his wife out and about, walking around Westbury Park. Both always spoke and took time out for a chat. Nice couple and a shame it ended how it did here.

The scorer of the first Stoke goal I can remember and still replay in my mind now. A pile driver from outside the box against Oxford Utd I believe and I think we went on to win 2-1. Oh how times have changed!

Alwaye felt there was a better player in there somehow, if someone could have got him moving 5 mph quicker and elegently knocking it sideways less, in other words maybe if someone had made him challenge himself and get the self-belief that can only come from that, he was a potentional Prem footballer.
