Sorry for Ballymena, but glad to hear that Stoke Michelin has been spared the axe & is going to get "modernised" on the back of Ballymenas closure. Got a few friends working at the Mich & always look out for it. Stoke can't get enough good news after all theyve had to endure over the decadesXx

Stoke wouldn't be Stoke without the Mich.
When I was a lad when you left school the big employers were the pots, the pits, steel or the Mich.
We lost 2 of the above and the other 1 is much reduced so glad the Mich is still going.

One minute JCB says they are doing fine the next it is laying off again. Also they appear to be laying off permanent staff whilst keeping the agency as they are cheaper.

Not good for Northern Ireland, I've got a mate over in Ballymena who I go running with when I'm over there. I think it was last year another one of their large factories serving a town was closing, a generator factory I think

Permanent employees should be protected against redundancy when agency workers are kept on, and especially when the agency workers are immigrants. Gone are the days of last in 1st out , and when a previously superb employer like JCB starts this shit then god help anyone in a similar factory with agency workers.

A lot of the agency workers are not Shanghai foreign/immigrant.They are former employees taken on through Arrow agency-so know the job but are paid less than permanent staff.Once they want to reduce the work force they get rid of the high paid staff and simply let the agency staff cover.

I bow to your superior knowledge, as I have not lived in UK for almost 7 years, but certainly in them days agency workers, especially on construction sites, and driving jobs, were mainly East European.

I work in Cheadle-and JCB isn't a construction site or a driving job it is a production line!! Do you even know what you are talking about?? A lot of the people I work with have either been JCB employees or are married to one. JCB only employ at the moment through an agency.

Most JCB employees work direct through JCB and blue arrow is the agency that JCB use when they get the agencies in . There is always a big agency (blue arrow) presence at JCB and JCB still take the odd token blue arrow worker on . Despite the job losses power systems at Foston took at least 1 blue arrow lad on last week and will be taking at least one more on next week . Rocester is always different to the others but Uttoxeter and P'S always seem to be safer than the others when it comes to jon loses

They are protected, but they can accept voluntary redundancy

No they don't . Blue arrow workers (not arrow) are on the same wage as JCB staff depending on which line they are on and JCB hold the majority shares in Blue arrow anyway . Agency are the first to go because it's easier as they have less rights . JCB staff are certainly fucked off then re employed via Blue arrow on occasions but this is the exception rather than than the rule . JCB is a shit employer and so is its agency

I actually said, oh ok, I accept that you are right, I then went on to say that when I worked in construction some 7 years ago all the agency staff were east European, now take a pill and calm down.

I used to work on The Mich..in the Making Shop when I was 20 before being made redundant. That part of the Mich in Sideway is derelict. Hard to imagine that in its Heyday it employed nearly 20,000 people. Now it must be less than 1,000.

The generator factory was in Larne, FG Wilson whe they were taken over by Caterpillar, not totally shut down but massively reduced, locals here today telling me 760 jobs went.

Back in '85 I did my work experience in the computer dept. of the Michelin (just inside the Chester Gate). It seemed to be populated entirely by bearded blokes named Geoff who all looked like professors from the Open University.
