People who gamble and bet regularly are phenomenally stupid, or phenomenally desperate Mate it's an addiction that cannot be described. Like nicotine and alcohol, some people can take it or leave it but others become addicted and cannot kick it. It's nowt to do with stupidity but sometimes desperation. But cannot put Ethers in the desperation category given his wealth. IMO it's in your genes that you become an addict.

If you haven't put a bet on the footy you aren't sweating and shaking in the corner, just have a bit of mental strength and refuse to do it. Desperation is the angle though I really can sympathise with though, that's very sad indeed.

Interesting that the gambling was still going on after he'd joined us. I'd assumed that coming to Stoke was the turning point, that he'd had to leave West Ham because of issues around his gambling and he'd realised at that point that he'd got to stop. Obviously that wasn't the case.

Have a bit of mental strength and refuse to do it is every bit as bad as telling someone who is severely depressed to pull themselves together.

I know people who gamble, people who smoke etc. But I've always just refused to do either because I know the house always wins and lung cancer/bank balance doesn't thank you for smoking so what's the point.

When you've seen a friend , with everything to live for as a doting father and grandfather financially secure with a loving wife, dying from lung cancer and still unable to kick a lifelong 40 a day habit, or an aunt still smoking through a traceoctomy duct because of throat cancer, you would get some idea of what real addiction is webby.

Addiction is not a disease, it's a choice that we make. The conditions in peoples lives is what makes people think they're addicted, but there's really no "addiction."

You think you can class Addiction into the same category as cancer and aids? Because that's what a disease is. People still make the decision to smoke, or to gamble. It's not a "DISEASE"

Change the word addiction for obsessive (which amounts to the same result) it becomes a compulsion that the person cannot break from. Just one big win and .... Maybe not a disease but a mental illness.

Sweeping statements, generalisations and opinions based on nothing but complete ignorance.
Yep, it's another enlightened Oatcake discussion on mental health issues...
