Terminally sick people with 6mths to live will be given the chance to have "assisted death", under proposals by certain MP's. What do you think. We have fantastic medical staff in hospices & drugs to ease pain, but some MP's & others say that we should have the choice to die. On a side note, in my line of work I have known many people that received a diagnosis of 6mths to live & are still alive...

It's a decision that should be left with the dying individual and them alone . It's got fuck all do with any one else including the state or any so called do gooder. It's about dignity

It's about dignity Don't you think it'll change the course of medicine. If you get a diagnosis of 6mths with the option of a lethal injection, it will be a damnsight cheaper on the NHS than treatment/cure...

Don't you think anyone in the right mind would consider all the options before deciding to end their own life ? . It's not like a man or woman that feels healthy , gets diagnosed with cancer , is given 6 months to live then says "kill me now". I'm sure they consider all the avenues first such as chemotherapy etc . Once they have tried to survive and fought till the end and are only being kept alive via machine and medicine then it's time to let them go with a bit of dignity . What proud old man that's probably fought for his country and worked hard all his life wants to lie on his bed whilst his sons and daughters wipe his arse because he isn't capable of doing so himself . Some people have a bit of self respect and if the decide it's time then it's time and not you , me or anyone else has the right to tell anyone else when there time as come . It should be regulated it should be policed and it should be a last resort and only administered once there is no going back . There is no point spending your final weeks in agony when you have the option to go peacefully . We put dogs down in this country that are suffering but we can't offer humans the same level of respect . It's a private matter and not to anyone else to stick their nose into . People need to mind their own business with things like this . The individual is what matters , fuck the red tape

The issue isn't just about dignity, as important as that is. It's about safety, consent and the hypocratic oath also. What one mental health expert deems "of sound mind" can be argued against by another. Without any safeguards it's a hopeless piece of legislation. In terms of principle - if you're pro euthanasia you're very close to being pro-suicide. Not quite, but close. It's a legal minefield. If you say you have the right to end your own life it provides another defence for clinical murder. It's not something you can pass on legislation without care. Personally....I'm against it. I have my reasons but that's my business.

The law allows animals to be put to sleep to end their misery , but we don't allow it for humans . I think that this is a contradiction of humanity .

Someone on BBC Radio 4 the other evening drew an analogy between humans and animals being put to sleep.
Somebody asked them how many animals are asked if they have suffered enough and wanted to die?
The person on the radio said "they could just tell" the animal wanted to die.
There was a pause.
All agreed it was a ridiculous and dangerous analogy.

I have two terminally ill dogs . One is 11 and the other is 13 and both have different forms of cancer and other related conditions . Both are on medication to alleviate as much pain as is possible . Both still have some quality of life and go about about life in a normal way . When the time comes that they cannot function properly or become immobile then that is the time to end their suffering . Much too often do I see animals who suffering has been extended by their owners oblivious to the impact it was having to the animal. Several times I have taken dogs to the vets riddled with maggots because the owner cannot bear to part with the dog . This is called cruelty in my opinion .

I'm generally in favour, although I have seen dozens of cases in our hospitals where quite/very/severely ill patients are "started on the morphine"...it's usually the end when they do this. I made an intervention once, got them to stop administering the morphine and the old fella is still alive and (un)well, but at least his elderly wife is not alone. That was five years ago and we play chess to this day.
I'm hot and cold with it all to be honest.
