So now we know what we are dealing with, the window is shut and the squad is settled. Some are very concerned and throwing more than their toys out of the pram, a few I have read who are completely losing it. The truth is like all windows everyone will believe we need a few more players and that certain areas are still not perfect, Mark Hughes obviously did as he tried to bring in MJ, for whatever reason it didn’t happen so now we have to wait till January to strengthen.
I am reasonably pleased with what we have done, it’s now up to the players who are here to knuckle down and show the doom mongers once more that the world is not such a dark place. I know we have made a slow start but it’s not been any different to the previous seasons under Mark Hughes. They have been slow burners the team are now finding their feet, bedding new players in and that can take a few games. Last season was a mix of lack lustre performances and then wham we went and beat Manchester City away, there is no reason why we can’t beat Arsenal next week in the same manner.
I agree the defence needs a leader and I would have hoped we might bring someone in on a loan to cover Ryan’s absence, though who is going to loan such a player so close to the deadline. I do agree that it’s a slight concern that PW was signed and as yet he isn’t trusted to partner Muniesa at centre half thus freeing Cameron to sit in with Whelan, that may be the case now the options are closed but we did get MVG and people seem to be writing him off so early, the lad must have ability and getting games should see it come to the fore, he does have to learn not to make silly errors in and around our final third. I don’t get how certain people just make a snap judgement based on a few games about new players. Last year it was Bojan, to lightweight never make it here at all, Diouf was dismissed in similar fashion after a few games, it seems if they don’t score a hat trick and play like Messi, not good enough.
Once Bojan is fit and firing he will slot into the free role behind Diouf and things will look so different.
The defensive part does need to be resolved and trust Hughes to get the combinations right in the next few weeks but I must admit like everyone else will be much happier when Ryan is fit again but until then we have to make the best of what we have and we do have options all of whom have performed adequately at this level including PW. At the moment we are like a misfiring engine, you know it just requires a god tune up and then you’ll have something that can purr like a contented cat once again.
I understand concern but hysteria in some quarters is over the top. Once more I refer people to Saturday, which was a dismal look into the recent past and I for one would rather look forward because once the glitches are cured we will have a lot of entertainment and points to enjoy.

Good post mate, a good analogy overall. Numerous others have probably said it but we got the majority of our business done early, if we'd have bought in a few of those players yesterday etc then I suspect a lot of people would view it differently.
In regards to mvg I think he will come good he is a very technically gifted player and has all the right attributed to succeed, I think one thing he just needs to work on is his positioning and when to stay or go (as the clash sang) which is something that of course will take longer than a couple of games I do believe this break will do him and a few others the world of good so that we come back firing and beat Arsenal.
March on together, we are Stoke!

That amount of rationale will be lost to most of the idiots on here ted, but to pick up on your point about van Ginkel, he WILL come good. I have got 100% faith in the lad. If Hughes shows patience with him, he will be a cracking player. Looking at how some of the games in Premier League have gone this season already, their will be many more bizarre results along the way. The league is much more even now. In short, dunna werrit !!!!

It's basically the old Chinese curse, 'May You Live in Interesting Times'. Personally I'm intrigued at this point rather than worried because there's just as much chance everything will be absolutely fine as not.
Because it's fucking September.

"Hold your nerve the best is yet to come." I bloody hope so! We haven't won yet! Presumably, if we have another spell, mid-season, when we draw two away games and lose at home, you'll be saying 'we haven't won in three'?

Lose at home twice in our first two games, two away draws one we were battered in and very fortunate not to lose, a draw at a fourth division team , yeh we are doing really well.

Don't need to be a genius to say 'best is yet to come' cos so far might have played ok, but we've won sweet FA

I did not say we were doing well. Just an observation that if the same sequence happened during the season, there would not immediately be queues at Samaritans

We've had this for the past 2 years under Hughes.
Few shoddy results and performances and the big girls blouse brigade is out in full force. This season is no different. Some people just never learn.
Those of us with a bit of nous and patience know everything will be fine.

No, because we've got a much longer span of data to work with i.e. process, analyze etc.

I feel we have the makings of a good team. We will come good, it'll just take time. I'm confident and I haven't lost my nerve. This is unusual for me as I'm a natural pessimist and tend to think if things have got bad they're bound to get worse. I've pretty much had us relegated every season since 1975 but this year I can't help thinking the early starters like Leicester and Palace will fade and we will surge past them like a 1500 metre Olympian coming off the final bend. Maybe not gold, but we'll certainly smash our personal best.
