I was thinking about Crouchy's record and started to suspect that the changing style of English football means it is unlikely that anyone will challenge this record again. I did a bit of research and the stats would seem to bear this out... If you look at the top ten header scorers, Crouchy is the only one that is currently playing, and in fact the bulk of the careers for the vast majority of them were well over a decade ago. The only ones significantly playing in the last ten years are Cahill and Heskey, who were so far behind Crouch they can't really be considered contenders. Here are the top ten headerers who are active now: That one's a couple of years out of date but you can see nobody is close to Crouchy, in fact most are not even halfway there and all are in the latter stages of their careers. According to Opta, the percentage of headed goals in the Premier League has been steadily declining, with 2013/14 producing the fewest headed attempts (four per game) and the lowest percentage of headed goals (15%) since they started compiling data. There's an obvious change in style across the board, with "sticking it on the big man's head" pretty much obsolete as a tactic these days (certain areas of Rio de Smethwick being the exception that proves the rule ). And a couple more stats to ram the point home... since 1995 when the Prem was reduced to 20 teams, individual players have scored seven or more headers in a PL season 10 times. Six of those came in the period 1995-2000, only four coming in the 15 years after that. And if we look at teams, only once in the last 15 years has a team managed 17 or more headed goals (ManU in 2010/11 with 18), whereas four teams did this between 1995 and 2000. So there you have it. No player from the last ten years has got even close to the record, playing style has changed, fewer headers are being scored. Conclusive proof that Crouch will be King of Headers forever. Rejoice!

And the style can change again just as quickly.
When TP becomes ManUre's manager at the end of the season and wins every trophy going with long balls and set pieces prominent then the rest of the footballing world will copy.
When he then takes on the real Brazil team and repeats the feat, football will be played that way for decades.
Simples!

What a great bit of research!
Well done sir!
The change in styles in pretty apparent when stats like these are presented, and barring Crouchie, the rest of the list isn't of big target man types.
I doubt that the players in the list would score as many if they were playing now.
Shearers premier league goals record is one that's probably never going to be beaten either

One of the disappointments of him beating the record was that I didn't see much mention of it.

One of the disappointments of him beating the record was that I didn't see much mention of it. to be fair though it's not a "real" record that anyone would really be interested in...don't get me wrong, it's a great achievement but in the world of dickie davies and brian moore no-one would even know about it. it was only when Sky came along that suddenly every single stat was recorded and suddenly you could have a "Record" for everything...seriously, not taking anything away from it just trying to add a bit of context; just one of those "Scored more goals from 17 yards than any other midfielder in the 68th minute ever has" kinda records. the commentator mentions it to make it look like he's knowledgeable more than anything else. the only issue i actually have with the record is that it re-inforces the idea that idiots out there have that he's only good with his head because of his size and can't play football when that really isn't the case at all

Anyway this is the oatcake! It's fucking scandalous that it wasn't over the front pages of every paper in the land, leading every news bulletin

How far behind is Andy Carroll? He's young yet, and if he got fit and put together an extended run over several seasons, surely he would have a chance of giving Crouchy a run for his money?

Can't get a definitive figure but he's on about 15, maximum. He's 26, he'd have to average 3 or 4 a season for the next eight or ten years to beat the record. In short, absolutely no chance.

2/3 of the goals John Tudor scored for Stoke were headers.

Crouch has a few more in him before he's done as well. I'm hoping for 3 this season from set pieces or crosses for a total of 50. I remember when he broke it, jumped in the air and fist bumped the Opta crew in Charlotte watching the game live. Also, first stoke player to have a record broken in the BPL. Love Crouchaldinho keeps winning me money on bets.
