Does anyone know exactly what he has had done?
I am 4 weeks on from a neck diskectomy and fusion and will be another 4 weeks getting back to a desk job. To be fair, I think Ryan is a bit fitter than me to start with.

I am wondering why he had to wait until august to have surgery. Surely the medical staff could figure that oUT at the end of last season? Was there a little bit of incompetence or is there a legitimate history of athletes with this injury fetti mg better on their own?

He'll be back after Xmas now, I reckon. Time to let him heal properly, not include him in the 25 until January and buy another centre back to add to the squad.

Possibly as a loan initially - Ryan won't be in our 25 for this transfer window at least. Lovely photo He'll definitely be in the 25 jeycov November is 3 months Why risk him?

I'd rather have him available for selection but we will pull through in the mean time. I just hope the pain he as endured with his injury won't affect him when he's back.

I think the loan vs. buy conundrum is interesting, if we are to buy are we looking for a 25/27 year old long term challenger/replacement (should the worse happen) for Ryan or a an older player (30+) who is looking for 6 months of first team before accepting a back up role, if its a loan it surely has to be the latter....either way it really cant be an up and coming youngster as we would not fix the 'experience' hole we have. I also wonder what the implications for Wilson are ref a new contract - if we sign a Ryan challenger then you have to assume he will be gone in this window as there will be no future for him... with the other two options its a pretty significant indictment of his position in the squad

He was poor at the weekend. Not sure what that means, Jase. He was excellent for them last season so because he had a poor game last week it means what? I'm over Huth going BUT we need a replacement similar to Ryan and Huthy as we don't have anyone in the squad like that at the minute.

It's pretty clear Hughes wants a different type of centre half. He opted for Muni and Geoff on Sunday and he utilised Wilson a lot last season too.
They're all more "mobile" (for want of a better word) and athletic than Huth. The big German was more of an old fashioned brick wall type defender. Nothing wrong with that of course, and he was a brilliant player for us under Pulis, I think we just need to accept the way Hughes wants to do things.
It's served us pretty well so far.

Think you're missing the point, mate. While I get the "mobile" bit we are crying out for a defender's defender now Ryan is out. I'm not suggesting we need Huth back but we need a player who doesn't mind putting it on the line for his team and none of our remaining central defenders do.

If Hughes is to be believed in the press conference then we won't be signing any replacement.VERY VERY risky imo and one we shouldn't be taking.

Hughes has said we will be fine with what we have, and that may be true, but if we find we aren't in late September, it is a long time to wait until January to put it right!

MH: I don't think the timescale has changed with Ryan Shawcross but I know the medical guys are happy with how it went.

Is it me or is everybody overreacting so much to Shawcross being out? Do not get me wrong, hes our best player, leader, captain and rock at the back and he'll be a huge miss but 3 months sounds worse. Theres two international breaks which chops off about 4 games from the Prem and end Nov/early Dec he'll be back.# If he comes back early December then theoretically he misses 15 games. 2 will have passed(Liverpool/Spurs) with nobody in so he misses 13 more. Last season he missed 5 games in a row and we won 3, drew 1 and lost 1. If we can cope without him for 5, we can for 10, and for 15. We wont bring anybody in either, I dont know why people think we will. RB: Johnson Barsdley Cameron CB: Cameron, Wollscheid, Muniesa, Wilson LB: Pieters, Muniesa, Wilson. No matter what peoples opinions are on Wolly or Wilson or even Cam and Muni, they have played football at the top league level and International level, so as much as theyure inferior to Shawcross theyre not absolute donkeys. Now if Texeiera was our only option I'd be calling for a replacement we will be fine without Shawcross, as centre half is the most overrated position and Whelan is our best defensive player. When he comes back though, he'll be back in the first team.

I think you're being harsh on Wilson, Geoff and Muni. We could've spent 10 mill and still not replaced Ryan. That's the problem with special players.

Surprised some are discussing Ryan like hes a piece of meat or, some unfeeling disposable asset. His arrival and growth under our appreciative eyes has coincided with absolutely everything that's been good as regards our football club for the last 8 or so year's. I for one reckon hes a legend already and whatever happens, he deserves at the very least, massive respect from every single one of us.I wish him all the very best and full recovery so we can again enjoy watching this very fine man and superb football player
