EVER for me
Been going Stoke since 1990 and this would be our biggest signing EVER by a long way.
I guess a few from the 70s-80s would disagree with the likes of Hudson, Shilton.
Considering that Shaqiri is a much better known player internationally recognised, I think this has got to win it.

Being 22 and only really getting into football in a big way in about 2001, I'd say ever in my time of watching Stoke.
My old man has told me numerous stories of the Greenhoff's and the Hudson's, and he says this is probably the modern day equivalent.

Peter Crouch, his signing has opened players eyes to the possibility that Stoke are a good side to play for and for that he is the biggest in recent times.

Gordon Banks was a world cup winner and best goalkeeper in the world at the time we signed him. I guess that can compare Hudson & Greenhoff were both not England internationals when they came to us. Stanley Matthews was one of the most recognised names in world football when he came back to Stoke. But still Im going for Shaqiri

Given the relative status, I'd say Hoekstra.
Signing a Dutch international from Ajax when you're in the third level of English football was a pretty big deal.

Has to be Banks, as stated above he was the England keeper in the world cup winning team and widely recognised as one of if not the best in the world at the time. Second has to be Shilton, our England keeper retires so we go out and buy the new England keeper! Our current signings are great but those two will take some beating.

Memory plays tricks at time, but I think the following is true.
Sir Stan - signing live on national TV Banksie - World Cup winning keeper and world record fee for a goalie Puffer - World Cup final hat trick and highest wage in the world Shilts - World record fee for a keeper Hudson and Osgood - world record bid for 2 players
The signing of Sami Bang was massive for the club because of the cost compared to income.
Of course the jury is still out on Shaq and when you read unbiased reports about him, some say he has been going backwards for a couple of years and will fail to realise his potential. Others say he will thrive at a more homely club like Stoke. Time will tell. Is he another Bojan or another Kitson?

Mark Stein .
We haven't until now signed anyone with his goal scoring ability or agility .
No one has come close .

In terms of expectation Shilton (who we signed for a world record fee for a keeper) was the last signing to compare with Shaqiri - if we get him today. But, as is well known, Shilton never lived up to expectations at Stoke - although he did at his later clubs.
Greenhoff was just a good young player who grew into a legend at Stoke - and the same can be said about Hudson.
Crouch was a big signing for us at the time, and there is no doubt that his signing opened the door to other signings - but he was no spring chicken and we all knew that, in international terms, he had little or no further miles ahead of him.
Stein was a huge part of our story and went on to big things in the top flight without us. But there was no dancing in the streets when we signed him.
So, in my opinion, given Shaqiri's comparative youth and superb pedigree (at international and club level) the only signing he can be compared with during my life time is Gordon Banks. Gordon, like Shaq still had a great career ahead of him when we signed him and he fully lived up to all the hype. If Shaq does the same we'll all be delighted.

Since......Rory Delap.
Not at the point of signing but in the opening prem season there wasn't a football fan in the world that didn't know his name, club and throwing ability.

Ps i love the golden one but thirne and sheron are about the same games to goals for us i think, tgo was just so memorable because it was a time of upturn in fortunes

It reminds me of the vibe going around at the time of the Shilton signing. That feeling of having to pinch yourself!
It felt like part of a revolution and completely new phase in the clubs history. It was a signing of intent. It was going up at least one gear.
Shilton was bigger than this in some ways because we wouldn’t be able to break the transfer record now!… its always problematic to compare eras.
Though Hudson had greater impact as a player, I think many of us weren’t so aware of just how great he was until we saw his magic week in, week out.
The Osgood/Hudson signing that so nearly came off would have been massive.
This is big!!!
