Very nice city - more geared to older couples I would say - certainly in the old town The bars in the old town were full of 'older' people on the Friday night and they made sure no football fans got in - almost like clubs? I wonder what Koln (why do we call it Cologne?) do with football away fans during their season. They struggled with 1,000 plus Stoke fans with the squares full of police all night so how do they cope with a regular 5,000 on every other Saturday? I am guessing that younger football fans head for another part of the city rather than the old town? Cologne is just the pronunciation, like Munich is Munchen, Spain Is Española, etc etc etc Apparently Cologne is the French pronunciation of Koln which we have adopted. Still makes no sense to me... I saw an hotel in the town with it's address on the building as Cologne - odd !!

That said, we weren't in our Stoke kits on the Friday, although I had a Stoke polo on. I found the locals to be incredibly friendly, very welcoming in fact. We had some good banter on the trams with them and were posing for photos afterwards at the station. There was one bar we were turned away at, but it's no surprise considering one lad was stood outside with his leg and foot covered in blood due to something that had happened in the square. Unfortunately, the police were there due to some fucking morons who felt it was necessary to try and cause trouble for others, which was a real shame. As much as we had some really good fun and I enjoyed myself, there were a few, just a few, who really couldn't help taking it too far.

Was speaking to a Cologne fan on Friday night, he was very surprised by the number of fans we brought over for a friendly tournament... maybe we will be invited back if they know they're gonna sell plenty of tickets at 70 euros a pop, not to mention, beer money in the ground, beer/food/hotels around the town etc! 70 Euros a pop? You must have paid on the day. We pre-booked and paid about 30 I think for both days? A bargain if you ask me. The food was cheap (3 euros a bratty) and the beer was pretty cheap until the last day where they inexplicably upped it to 5 euros a pint causing a bit of aggro in the concourse. That said, they were serving me at 4 euros a pint, because I was giving them exact change. The girls were charging 5 euros a pint, because I don't think they were able to explain that they had run out of coin money to give change for, if you get my drift.

You know you've made an impression when you get the same Facebook post shared by a friend in England & in Canada. The Canadian person is English & has no interest in football but is married to a German girl. She has the post sent to her from from her Koln friends who joined in with the Stoke fans in the concourse doing the Muniesa. Boys…you've made me very proud

Would you recommend Cologne for a City Break?? As a couple.. It has already been said but I would just add that it is fantastic for a couple. I took the Mrs to Cologne for the weekend for a "mini break" and we both loved it. As I had the wife with me we shyed away from the Corkonian where everyone else went but went in the Fruh Brauhaus that one of the lads in Elliot Hackney's blog mentioned. Fantastic in there and we loved it. Did a boat trip on the Rhein yesterday as well. Neither of us is particularly religious but we were both blown away when we went into the Cathedral. It was nice on Friday afternoon as well when we sat down by the river and had a few bottles of Kolsch while people watching and soaking up the sun. Great weekend and the fans at the games were outstanding. I can't get the fucking Marc Muniesa song out of my head!!!!! Not everyone went to the corkonian, we tried a few brauhaus as well. We had a Stokie and his wife sat next to the four of us in a restaurant down near to the river front on the Friday evening, wasn't you was it

Yep sounds about right, the steaks were bloody marvellous in that restaurant. In fact an excellent weekend all round, the Mrs enjoyed it so much she said she would go again next year, but she did put in a proviso of depending on where the pre-season games are.

I think that most of the locals enjoyed having Stoke fans over , there were a few idiots but there are everywhere , most of the banter was well taken and I loved seeing locals signing and mixing with the Stoke fans in the town and applauding our singing at the stadium
