After years of tenting I'm looking to upgrade to a caravan. However, as I passed my driving test in 2002 I have to take a further test to tow a caravan.
Has anybody done the same? And if so, could you recommend a company who provides the training? Do you have to take a theory test as part of the towing test?

Where's your caravan, where's your caravan. Where's your caravan, where's your caravan. Oooowee, Andrew is a gypo.
Good luck with that

Unless it's a burning passion you have , I would seriously think again . It's not just the cost of buying one , but it's also the cost of fixing your vehicle up to tow it , the cost of insurance , the cost of site fees and all the other miscellaneous costs . It's much cheaper to rent a static out for a week or holiday let and you have a lot more space to move around . I wouldn't bother .

Motor homes aren't cheap either ...£40,000 or more ...
That's roughly 100 weeks rental of a private property and without the need to shit in a bucket .
During the 80's you could buy up small Welsh stone cottages for as little as £8000 .....
Now they sell for £ 80,000 ...or more .

Towing a van isn't rocket science. Why do you need training and a test?
- use your mirrors - leave a lots of space from the vehicle in front - slow down and accelerate gradually; use your gears to maximise torque - goive lorries a wide berth when overtaking - reverse with opposite lock and use your mirrors; if you see the end of the van in your mirror, steer in the opposite direction until it disappears; steer with slight adjustments, don't overdo it.

I agree but unfortunately the government say if you passed you're full driving test after 1997 you have to take a seperate towing test

I love going down to my caravan. £1000 a year site fees and about £10 per quarter for electricity. Hardly a massive cost!

As a Hgv driver i can already tow caravans, im seriously considering getting one too. MY daughter is too young for us to go abroad and she will not remember the holidays anyway, and we would be to concerned about it been too hot and have to carry loads of extra items.
im a firm believer that there is loads of nice places within the UK that people dont appreciate. with a caravan you can go for a weekend break where ever you like pretty much and comes at a fairly cheap cost. you can get a decent 6 berth for under 5grand.
Will be ideal to go with the lads on a decent fishing trip too and be able sink a few beers down.
