He's the only player from that era who would walk into our first team now. It was mad how much better he was than every one else on the pitch

Hatrick re Reading (feel free to correct me if wrong) was excellent. Superb player hampered by injury

Sergei was immense, the only player I can remember ever beating him in the air was Fortune-West.

But yes, he would get in many premier league sides

For Sergi see Huth Hoekstra well thats a different story the guy made Nicky Sorey at Reading look like a sunday league player everytime i agree he would get into the team now

Sergei was immense, the only player I can remember ever beating him in the air was Fortune-West. Wasn't he 7ft tall ? He was certainly a bit of a unit, I still can't believe how he put that header wide in the play off second leg.

His stature was even bigger in my eyes though. Stoke legend. Shame he left after just two seasons, he could have ended up as a bedrock of our premier league promotion side!

Sergei would be a great player to bring back for a half time introduction imo. I doubt he'd know how much of a light he was in a period of dark, or how much appreciation he's still held in

Can't remember much of him as I was a lot younger then, but my dad would always tell me to keep my eyes on him and he'd go on about how lucky we were to have him play for us.

I bought the VHS of that game for 99p when Hooky was on our books. There is a wonderful moment where the orange maestro left Gary Neville floundering on his arse on the floor.

he was immense. Not one of our finer moments but when we lost to wigan on a night match 6-1 Hoeskstra even with his glass legs worked his nuts off where everyone else couldnt give a shit

I was fascinated by his warm up routines with the football
just dribbling around doing tricks - always near the halfway line so the opposition could see him too
worth the entrance money in itself
and opposing fullbacks watching on - simply shitting themselves
and all before a whistle blown or a ball kicked in anger

Thanks for sharing- I actually recall seeing him jogging along pre match juggling the ball heel to heel up in the air behind him as he run forwards
I have never seen anybody do that before, or since

Bloody hell 19 years ago I was at Wembley for that match. Got lost after the match trying to find our minibus ( no mobile phones then ) and had to cadge a lift back on a minibus, one of the last leaving, which had a Stoke flag on the back. Turned out to be a group of coppers from Stoke and 'Castle. The trip back was an eye opener to say the least, not what you would think our finest police would be, dodgy as the lot of them You would not believe what they got up to :-/They dropped me off outside Maxims in 'Castle at 5.30 am , after charging me money for the trip back. I had to be at work for 7.00 am that morning absolutely knackered but buzzing from the game the night before.
