I think there is a lot of arrogance and one upmanship on this board regarding our current position. Obviously people with short memories or too young to remember where we came from. Today, Vale and Crewe don't have the money or good fortune that we have and have to manage with what they've got to merely survive. Pope was from all accounts on a contract at Vale that consumed a very large percentage of their wage bill and it was unsustainable. I think Vale's chairman/owner has made mistakes along the steep learning curve that he has had to take but what people shouldn't lose sight of is the fact that he saved their club from extinction and that he has far better financial acumen than 99.5% of supporters of football clubs. Basically, Pope, on the wages he was on, was a luxury they just could not afford and the Smurf should be applauded for doing his best to ensure the Vale can continue to survive in a very difficult environment. There but for the Grace, etc., etc. Vale are not our rivals, they are just another team representing our great city. We should be looking to help them by loaning out our up and coming players, with massive mutual benefits. I agree with the first half of your post. It is a complete lack of class to take the piss out of clubs not competing with the likes of Bury, it wasn't so long ago that we couldn't compete on the pitch with the likes of Bury or Wrexham or Notts County or Nuneaton and Telford for that matter. It could happen again. However I have no sympathy for the Vale and don't see why we should help them. The truth of the matter is that if Port Vale ceased to exist our club would become stronger still. We could then think about support in the mid 30k and wouldn't be plagued by thousands of people in our own city hating us and obstructing our progress. BM
I agree entirely with this. We should rise above it. Ignoring them annoys them more anyway, though not quite as much as patronising them.
In the long term, they remain a small but enduring drag on our growth prospects as a club and I will not mourn them when they finally go bust. I shall however, make sure to be cloyingly fulsome when I offer my sympathetic and fraternal condolences to any of their ex fans I meet. They will just love that.

If Vale did go bust, I don't think it would affect our support very much at all . Think if the positions of the respective clubs were reversed, would you go to the Vale if Stoke went bust? I know I most certainly wouldn't. Most football fans(other than glory hunters ,who don't count as football fans anyway) support their club passionately,Vale fans are no different to most fans of any other club. In the short term, I agree with you, very few Vale fans would join our support. I'm sure their phoenix club "FC VALIANTS 2020 (we hate sjoke!)" in the Bulmers Sunday morning league would maintain a good crowd for a quite few years. It's a generational thing though and in the long run their children and grandchildren would gradually be rescued from the dark side and flock to join us in the Champions League.
