Playing for Philadelphia at centre back...along with Wenger!

Is there any reason we signed him?
He's one of a select bunch in these Premier League years that even before he signed you knew we didn't him.
Andy Davies-we had Griff and Wilko for right back. Shawcross, Cort, Faye and Sonko for centre back. We never needed him.
Edu-we had Whelan, N'Zonzi, Adam, Palacios, Delap and Whitehead for central midfield. And Shawcross, Huth, Upson, Higginbotham and Woodgate for centre back. Cameron and Wilson to cover all of the above too.
Sidwell-we've got Whelan, N'Zonzi, Adam and then should have used Cameron in there and got a better right back. He was never needed. We also had Palacios who in his sub cameos last year was generally pretty good I thought.

Probably just as a fucking mate for the other American lads, but then again, ChiefDelilah says Tony Pulis doesn't sign a player who he doesn't want, so i'm obviously wrong.

To be honest though, I have no fucking idea how Maurice Edu ended up at Stoke.

Cheap emergency cover if needed.

Cheap emergency cover if needed. That's what most would think, but did we really need emergency cover for his position?

I really do think that it was just about having a settled American pal for Cameron, who I think must have been the first player TP signed from abroad.

Cheap emergency cover if needed. We didn't need cover though, look at that list of who we had!

My mate Demar Phillips was before him. Then there was Triggi and Ziggy who TP technically didn't sign. And De Laet who I'm convinced was always really a Man Yoo player.

In the first season of our PL life I am convinced TP signed a few players as a kind of insurance if we were immediately relegated and lost our then star players. How else do you explain Soares, Tonge, Davies, Sonko and a few others. Obviously Edu doesn't fall into this category but him along with Arismendi, Ness, Cuvelier perhaps the transfer team saw them as financial investment to sell on for profit. Palacios was just a financial fuck up.

Demar Phillips was signed to keep Ric happy, de Laet was signed to keep Man Utd happy and Arismendi didn't work out because he didn't have a mate at the club.

I remember SSN interviewing him while he was sat in his car on his way from the Brit - and Edu saying that he hoped to make his début in the next match on Saturday. Even at that point I thought "no chance, you'll struggle to make the bench". He really was a "why" signing. I think I can see logic in every other signing - cover, development, panic (in our first season), but by the time we brought in Edu we were established.
