I wasn't there sadly, but I would not have applauded any goal scored against Stoke City, by anyone. During the match Gerrard is just another opposition player and thus is the enemy.
That said, I can understand those who did and it has brought has some nice publicity. Just couldn't have brought myself to do it.
After the match - yes I'd probably have joined in then. Gerrard is a decent sort and has served his club and country with skill and with loyalty, in an era when loyalty in football is in very short supply.

We were 5-0 up. We could afford to be magnanimous. It didn't do our reputation no harm. I applauded, but I wouldn't if it had been a close scoreline.
OS.

I clapped, I even stood up, and it did feel a bit like we were being a tad condescending to be honest. Not the first time I have applauded an opposition goal, but not something I make a habit of. Peter Thorne's hat-trick against us for Cardiff got a round of applause from me. I thought the treatment Gerrard got during the game was quite restrained this time (loved the song about not winning titles)and we reserved most of our vitriol for the greedy bastard. Once they had used all 3 subs the chance to give him a "send off" was diminished, so applauding the goal fitted nicely. As others have already stated, had the game been in the balance I reckon the reaction would have been totally different. Well done SCFC for creating such a "perfect" scenario!

It seems mixture of: 1) People wanting to applaud as sign of respect; 2) People taking the piss a little; 3) People not doing anything. Each did so under their own decision, and I'm sure everyone feels comfortable with their decision. So, all is fine
