our fans were very very classy today. Made me very proud. Topped off one of the best days of my Stoke life.

As a kid, I played for the worst team in football history, Tean Boys Under 12s, and we would regularly lose 12 or 13 nil.
Every time we scored a consolation goal, we got a well-meaning but extremely patronising clap from the opposing team's parents. It was so belittling, it made you almost wish you hadn't scored.
I was reminded of those dark days today, when Gerrard had his special moment. I like to think after the game Mark Hughes went into the Liverpool changing room with a sympathetic look on his face and said well-meaningly, without a hint of sarcasm, "Well done lads, don't worry about the score, the important thing is you enjoy yourselves, football is for fun," just like the Cheadle Juniors manager did every single fucking time.

I don't think anyone was applauding his goal or performance. I think the people who applauded were agknowledging a player who has had an outstanding career for club and country. He'll be a loss to the premier league.
Respect was the reason people applauded

Nothing wrong with showing respect for an outstanding career with one club. We're often wrongly accused of having no class. Stoke fans showed huge amount of class today.

I grew up in the culture of applauding opponent’s goals when they deserved applause, that was in the 60s and 70s. Of course that is totally taboo these days. People would think you have gone soft or that its a sign of weakness nowadays.
I remember applauding Glen Hoddle’s debut goal in the Boothen, and Ive heard Newcastle fans applauding Stoke goals at St’James Park and even appreciative applause of the odd Stoke goal at Old Trafford and Anfield.
It’s a personal choice, but what’s the big deal. I think society was different in those days and there was more of a sense of appreciation of others and fairness, you could say it was less narrow minded. Didn’t mean that you didn’t want your team to win. It was just that there was a general appreciation of the game alongside the support for your team.
The game (and society) has lost something imho.

There were plenty who did and plenty who didn't. Ultimately, it served a purpose in giving the fans the oportunity to gain some positive coverage from the media on a day where everything else fell nicely into place for us too. I stayed seated and didn't applaud but this is a totally valid observation I think. Our lot stayed seated too. Have no grievance with him as a bloke but he was an opposition player scoring against my club so I wasn't ever going to applaud him. It's a personal decision, not saying it's right or wrong it's just what I did.

Am I making it up but did think our defence kind of let him cut through and score without much of a challenge on him.

If Muni hadn't pulled up injured he probably wouldnt have scored which MOTD didn't point out. Talking of which Mini looked upset when he went off. Hope it isn't a recurrence of same knee problem.

If the majority of people were like me, they stood up to clap and give a derisery jeer for a goal just to take the piss, I did it because they had for the first time trying to take part in such a one sided game, I had not realised that it was Gerrard that had scored when I first stood up to jeer

I clapped, respect for Gerrard. He has given his all for England, sometimes being the only one. It was a nice touch, and it went both ways. We gave Sterling stick, they clapped and even some Liverpool fans stayed behind and clapped at our players final lap. All in all a great and respectful day was had

It's worth noting the applause Crouch got when he scored from the Liverpool fans and also the reception he and Charlie Adam got whilst leaving the pitch at FT
Add to that I don't know if anybody else noticed the 20 or so Liverpool fans who stood in the away exit and clapped the Stoke team as it went past them on the lap of honour

Just total respect for the career and a fitting end for one of England's stalwart performers. Their fans to a man applauded Crouches goal, they know their football and you could see the odd ones applauding both the 2nd Diouf and Nzonzi goals in appreciation of their quality.

Got nothing against him but not going to appluad goal against stoke. Felt like I was in away end Not at all, it is up to personal feelings. To be fair, the win massively over shadows his goal.

If it was 0-0 and Gerrard just put Liverpool into a 1-0 lead, I doubt that there would be much applause by the stoke fans, but we were 5-0 up so it didn't matter, he's been a true legend for Liverpool and fair play to him for not going to a bigger club for trophies, deserved applause in my opinion

Probably worth mentioning that the stoke fans were good value for money. Well done them for giving raheem shit, applauding stevies goal and being hilarious.

I am over from the USA and staying with family in Liverpool...they are all life long reds. Last night was absolutely surreal as we had dinner out in the city with family and friends. One thing I can tell you for sure is that SCFC gained a huge amount of respect yesterday for the way we played and the respect we gave Gerrard... and rightly so. Most fans around me applauded Gerrards goal. He was once again their MOM and was the only one who could be arsed. In a sport full of players who are utter bellends, Gerrard in my view is one of the good guys

Got nothing against him but not going to appluad goal against stoke. Felt like I was in away end I didn't applaud, but it's each to their own. Nothing against Gerrard but if he bowed out silently I prob showed more appreciation? Got fed up with the media hype of his move to the MLS.

Before the game I was completely against applauding Gerrard but given the circumstances I'm glad he was applauded from all parts of the ground, we certainly gave him a memorable sendoff!

I think most people in the ground did (stood and applauded) - as said elsewhere it worked out perfectly for the player and our club were spun in a
positive light
a good thing all round
