Just watched the Gareth Southgate press conference regards the under 21 squad. Very impressed with his response to questions and the way he comes over. Total opposite to that bumbling idiot Hodgson. Future England manager possibly.Would also recognise a decent centre half when he sees one!!.

That attacking line-up is better than the senior squads.

What's concerning is the players missing. Barkley, Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Luke Shaw etc. Why wouldn't they want to play? Surely it's an honour to represent England at any level?

It's about the players that have been there in qualifying and the players you mention haven't been as far as I know.

Midfield seems a bit light although I don't know much about a lot of them.
Certainly looks good in the attackers.

Shaw was quite clear about the fact that he did want to play wasn't he? it was LVG that didn't want him to and likewise, Martinez made it clear that Barkley wouldn't be available for selection due to his injuries this season and the risk of a re0-occurrence. it isn't always down to the players, you have to remember they're under contract to their clubs so it's the clubs that have the final say. to be fair to him, Barkley is actually well known as being very down to earth and a complete opposite to some of the young "Big time charlie's"

Yep I've looked at the facts...and come to the same conclusion so you'll know that neither Shaw or Barkley have pulled out or refused to play then? Manchester United requested that Shaw wasn't chosen (despite Shaw publically saying he wanted to and would go against LVG's wishes if needs be) and Southgate has said himself he didn't select him in order to respect Man. Utds wishes. Southgate took the issue out of the player's hands and simply didn't select him. and Martinez made it clear from the start that Barkley wasn't an option due to the injuries he's had this season. so how have you stil come to the same conclusion exactly? yes, some young footballers are twats and i wouldn't disagree with that for a second but it's a bit pathetic of some grown adults on here who think "Issue that relates to a young footballer must AUTOMATICALLY equate to that player being an arrogant twat...there can be NO other reason" says more about the posters themselves and their desperate need to moan, whinge and slag people off than it does about the players in question if you ask me

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling and Manchester United defender Phil Jones were all eligible to play in the competition, but not selected. "With the guys that have been up with Roy for a year, I don't feel it serves any purpose to bring them down into our squad," said Southgate. "I was able to pick them if I wanted to. Roy has said from the start 'you take who you want to'. "There are a couple of players that Roy would've wanted to take to the senior games in June but he wants to look long-term and see what's best for the players."
On the face of it it was Southgates decision
Appeciate the scepticism though.

Is this where the women's game have got it right?
Players are under contract to both the FA and club, and receive money from both.
I was reading the other day that England's women are on about 40k per year. They have the finances much more realistic!
