The wife wants me get her some bark chippings, and she's after the small Chipped variety, rather than the stuff you get from Wickes/B&B etc. Does anyone know where I can get some at a decent price?

I got a "half load" recently from a fella who has made a business of collecting it from local farms in Surrey and Sussex and delivering to clients.
I paid £60 and I estimated it was the equivalent quantity of about 30 of the bags you could buy at a garden centre and so about half the price. Only downside is they just dump it in a big heap on the drive!
Don't know where you plan to put it and what you hope to get from it?
My aim was to put it on the borders to improve the soil and keep down the weeds. I have to say to that end it has worked well but it was already somewhat composted and therefore maybe not as ornamental as the posher stuff that comes in bags.

My wife does gardening for a few locals, and it's for decorative ground cover. We found a place at the back end of Caverswall that's working out cheaper than the DIY stores as long as you fill your own bag.

It's really great stuff for borders and raised beds , it makes a great mulch and weed suppressant , I love the stuff .......the trouble is so do the local cats .

Richie, try this FANTASTIC place - I've used them for different garden products many times over 25+ years, and nobody else can even start to match their top-class products and fabulous service:ACRESGREEN Tel: 01782 393437 www.acresgreen.co.uk/They're a Family Business established over 40 Years ago. I think they're near Caverswall.
I had the lawn re-done a few weeks ago - they supplied all the stuff, and it is the most brilliant quality.
And before anyone suggests it, despite being such a fan of them I am not changing my ID to murphtheturf. I know you lot!

As a professional gardener, this place supplies the best stuff I've ever used. The composted bark (pine, generally) is very fine and great at keeping the weeds down (put to the right depth as Fraise says). I worked at trentham gardens and it's what they use (and bought from this place). would recommend you pick up though as their delivery charges are steep if you're not buying in big numbers. I've used it with a membrane underneath, very effective against weeds
