Shawcross, duh. Whelan or Walters would be my choice for the vice-captain.

Shawcross is very vocal, I don't know why people think he isn't, he just doesn't go over the top, has quiet words rather than a full on shouting match.

Obvious. One is good enough for the first team and the other isn't (Whelan).

Whelan? As captain? I wouldn't even fucking have him in the starting 11.

So why hasn't Hughes changed it? Ryan is the right man for the job, anything else is utter rubbish. It's obvious why he hasn't changed it. whelan has always been the captain on the pitch, before that Delap was. You mean the Irish lads.

Etherington said during the Blackburn game that it never would have happened if Shawcross was captain during the game.
He said he was authoritive and would have told people exactly what to do in that situation.
So coming from a former team mate, I'd take his opinion.

Here comes the Whelan is holier than thou crew even though he clearly isn't a good captain compared to Ryan. Mental this has't even shitbinned yet. Well, it has he who shouldn't be criticized in it so I can see why it's still up. To be honest, I kept out of it beyond putting Ryan, but I have to agree. Fucking barmy that people think Glenn is a better option. I like Glenn, he has been a model professional at this club and an excellent servant, but this season has demonstrated why he won't ever be captain material. We lose Ryan, Whelan is naturally made captain and the next game (Newcastle I think it was), Glenn runs around like bambi on ice, a kid who's drunk too much coca cola, losing the ball and going mental at his team mates. He did however put in a good tackle at the end and that is why we gave him the benefit of the doubt. He then publicly 'blasts' the other players after the Blackburn nightmare, in-which HE was one of the worst players on the pitch that day. Glenn clearly struggles with the responsibility of captain because it requires you to not only think for yourself, but think for others. Ryan does it incredibly well, he's composed and able to direct people without screaming at them all the time. He's also a very clever player when it comes to referees. Ryan always approaches the ref on his own when a decision has gone against us unfairly, and he doesn't need the other players to stand around screaming, which has never worked anyway. Ryan is clearly an intimidating character on his own and can demand authority. It's a no contest. Ryan is absolute leadership class. Whelan wouldn't even be my vice captain.

Whelan isn't guaranteed a start, for that reason alone, Ryan is the better choice.

Fuck me, I know it's a slow week but I cannot believe that this thread even exists?! Anyone who doubts Shawcross as our captain needs to find another sport to follow.
Firstly, Whelan should not even be on the pitch never mind wearing the armband.
When he is, he might seem constantly vocal but he is always quick to dish out a bollocking which is not necessarily what a captain should do - especially when you are more than prone to the odd blunder yourself.
Ryan has the respect of his teammates which is obvious to see, so no need for any changes.

I remember making a similar comment at the time and I don't understand why people are dismissing it out of hand. I have never been a Whelan fanboy - far from it, but in the games that he was captain I thought that not only did we, as a team, play better but he, as a player, had some of his best games. You quite often hear that the weight of the captains armband is a burden but he rose to the occasion. Under Pulis, Ryan's limitation to rove, be restricted to humping the ball to the wings along with Huth at his side allowed him more time to look around, see the game and direct matters. Under Hughes he's given more freedom to play a but he also has to take on the Huth enforcer role. All of these factors lead me to believe that Whelan would be a better captain the way that we currently play.

gotta love the way that even grown adults who have watched football all their life seem to think that shouting a lot loudly equates to being a good captain and if you don't do it then you're just not the right man for the job! utter bollocks!!!! if you want to inspire character and passion in your side then there are plenty of ways of going about it; leading by example, being strong in the challenge etc. Beckham was one of the last England players to play with true passion for the shirt he was wearing. did he shout and holler at people when he was captain? nope! he didn't need to, he showed his team what to do by (as an example) picking his arse up off his shoulders against Greece and giving it 150%. dedication, resilience, determination and character are what make you a good captain NOT having a loud voice and being able to bollock people on the pitch (just ask Griff how well it went down when he bollocked Rik hardly inspired unity did it?)...oh and being a guranteed starter which Glenn isn't. prize for "No brainer thread of the year award" goes to........
