It isn't that simple. Afonso Alves scored more than 1 a game for Heerenveen (45 in 39 games) and he flopped at Middlesbrough. It's about what system he's in now, what players are around him and what type of service he's getting. Do his attributes match the squad he's moving to and even the league he's moving to? It's all a factor. Some you can be sure on, some you gamble on. Indeed, correct on all accounts. The point I made was opposing the earlier comments from some that he only scores simple goals and offers nothing more, so we shouldn't touch him. That is complete horse cock. Whether or not he has the tools that can work with our machine, is another kettle of fish. 1 that we all need to trust the manager to work. After all, a massive percentage of our support thought that Kenwyne and Wilson P would have fit us like a glove. Sometimes, as you say, a gamble is required. I would be over the moon for a gamble like that to be attempted on a Dutch international with a 1 in 2 goal rate. Even if he only scores tap-ins, much of our poor finishing from Crouch, Walters and Diouf were all guilty of missing these tap-ins quite a lot this season. For me, creating the chances has not been a problem this year, it has been the finishing. Here we have a capable finisher and if MH wants him, it could be the 1 we have been waiting for. I presume you're talking about my comment. I did say after that, from what I've seen, he wouldn't suit us. We need a different type of striker although I think Diouf is that man.

Not just you mate, iwebby also said something similar. No problem for opinions and all that, I just dont understand how anyone can just dismiss someone so easily.
As said before, Jones and Palacios seemed to suit our team more than most, and generally both failed.

Watch him play then see,he's got talent all around him, and even though he does score he misses hatfullls too. I don't think anyoneis writing him off.... But just no thanks.

How about we give Diouf 38 games in his actual position and see what happens?

They were raving about Bas Dost and I watched a Europa league tie, think it might've been v Everton. He was so poor he was funny, couldn't run, couldn't control and couldn't shoot and lost every header. Looked like the stereotypical Sunday league player. I know one swallow doesn't make a summer but my god he was freakishly bad.

All I can is its only a rumour and I would trust MHs judgement. He hasn't got many wrong yet. I'm sure that if we were going to spend big bucks on him that we would watch him on a number of occasions before making a bid. All said though he got goals in Belgium before going to Germany so it can't all be down to the other players where he is.

Is he any good? We seem to be linked with him every six months. He's not shit nor is he brilliant, he scores goals but misses lots of chances as well. Not much pace but he doesn't need at Wolfsburg. I'd stick with Diouf over him.

We need pace up front as a lone striker in a front three. Diouf has it, and we don't play to it enough. Any new striker to come in to challenge Diouf has to have pace as well. We try to hit teams on the counter with pace and we need more of it to do it successfully - we have not been as sharp on the counter without Wingy (of last season), Moses and Bojan.
For that reason, Dost (like Rhodes) should be a non-starter, and even with a less impressive goals to games ratio, we should instead be looking at Stefano Okaka, or similar, who has a bit more of the required pace and power.

Excellent goal scoring record, strong tall player, some international experience.
Why not? A natural Crouch replacement and we can keep Crouch as well.

You'd keep Crouch because he's a valuable source of goals still.

Lost for words lads to be honest. Apparent immobile striker that relies on quality service cannot fit into a Stoke side. I suppose Peter Crouch with his darting runs and self-made goals (Man City apart ) doesn't suit us either. Ah well, each to their own I guess. I too watch plenty of Bundesliga by the way and I feel he would offer us something we haven't had since Thorne.

You'd keep Crouch because he's a valuable source of goals still. What I'm saying is would you really have two lanky streak strikers when we need a mobile front man to play with and/or instead of Diouf? Keep Crouch and sign someone different to Bas Dost.

Have seen this guy play alot both in the Eredivisie and the Bundesliga. He's good at putting the ball in the back of the net and thats about it. His technique is shocking and he has zero pace. If he gets good service he will score though. I say if we can get him cheap (5-7M) then yes otherwise no thanks.

"i watch the bundesliga and beleive me he isn't very good" ...... Also means... " i dont watch the bundesliga but saw the last ten minutes of a match the other night when my mrs was on the loo " i love how everybody watches a lot of this foreign football when scfc are linked to a player but never comes up with any recommendations from that league... But this is the oatcake ????
