Quite incredibly it's also the anniversary of the year I started supporting Stoke. What a coincidence.

I was sitting in block 24 at the back of the Boothen end, and at about 70 minutes there was a hugh buzz around the corner section, Hull were 1-0 behind to Ipswich (I think) and that 'buzz' never went away continuing to the first season in the Prem. Staying up that first season was amazing and will remember it till the day I die.

Had my eldest son in my arms, he was a baby!!!. Had tears in my eyes, I couldn't believe it. He is now seven and his younger brother is 5. I am so proud that they have only experienced Stoke as a premier league club. please God, that despite living in deepest Sussex, they will remain Stoke fans. Maybe that will be easier in the premier league rather than going to places like Gillingham,Scunthorpe,Macclesfield,Stockport and Lincoln....days I will always remember, just not fondly.

What do you mean with, , green slime at the helm, ? I always remember, during the dark days of 1997-1998 season, Peter Coates was not the saint he is now...he was quite often referred to in the Oatcake as the Green Slime. He was absolutely hated - in fact, Blackpool's demo brought back memories our own "invasion" of the Waddington Suite after Brum in 97. I'm pretty certain that Peter Coates has never been referred to as "The Green Slime" in The Oatcake.

Don't get me wrong, I will support my club forever, wherever, but both my boys have been born and lived thus far in Sussex. They wear their Stoke tops to football training and out in the streets. However they live in Sussex, close to Brighton. Whilst being in the premier league, at least their mates have heard of Stoke! I am always concerned that their loyalty to their father and his loyalty to his football club means they are one step away from bullying. The premier league status might make that less likely? It would be just so sweet of we ended up with some glory hunters from the South East as well as manutd don't you think? If I can indoctrinate them, they can indoctrinate their mates, it will be worthwhile. My point is that I want their Stoke fan life to be easier than mine. Isn't that what parenting is about

Mate, no criticism/offence just so proud of my boys keeping the faith. My nightmare is that they bow to peer group pressure and support Brighton, their local team( though thankfully shite) or join the mad ranks of glory hunters like Chelski/manure. I have set up the Republic of Stoke in a little village in Plumpton and thus far my boys have bought into it. I hope they will still be loyal if we go back to where we have been. In the meantime it's easier for them to reply Bojan when their mates say Rooney. I want my boys to share my passion, but distance won't make that easy for them. As for me, I will remain loyal forever. If all else fails, I try fear. I have told them both they can support any team they like, but if it's not Stoke, it will be team Barnardos

fair enough, but whatever happens, u cant predict what will happen with ur kids. If my Son followed Vale, i wouldn't like it, but would respect them for their choice, although I would be pestering them to support Stoke

St. Peter and Sir Tony
I love that forever grateful banner from Valencia away.
We've been on one hell of a ride.

Be honest, unconditional love is one thing, but please tell me you would go beyond "pestering". My point is, my boys weren't born in Stoke, they are used to Stoke in the premier League and living in Sussex, have no idea of the Vale. No disrespect to anyone local that supports the vale, but it ain't gonna happen in sussex, so supporting Stoke is slightly easier if you have no connection, loyalty....but they are in the premier league. My own loyalty has ben cemented by being exiled. When I rock up its a set off at 8.30 and. Return at 22.30 at best. I cannot afford a season ticket, but I can afford loyalty. My boys loyalty is easier to manipulate in the premier league. The vale have enough trouble getting supporters now, imagine my dilemma if, was a vale supporter trying to get my boys to support the vale in Shit , port vale doesn't even exist as a place on the map., they would think it's something out of Harry Potter. Ps before you think this is the usual I care more than you shite Am taking both boys to Brighton v Stoke u21s at the Amex Friday night, we could be the away crowd, but proud

What was it 95 minutes? and then Styles in the return,we really did upset someone that season The second leg is the only game where I have considered a refereeing performance so one eyed, so pathetic, so shambolic that I couldn't in all seriousness rule out corruption, Mutters. Later exposure to Styles work however, simply confirmed it as utter incompetence. Ordinarily I would agree with you about incompetence over corruption in the case of 99% of refs. The one exception to that rule where I might consider it to be the other way around is the very person mentioned above. I've always found it slightly odd that he retired having just turned 45 when he had potentially a good five years left in him (no upper age limit these days) citing lack of support from the FA. Probably just my utter dislike of the man who seemed to take a genuine pleasure in perverse decisions getting the better of me.

Reminds me slightly of my own 2 boys, we were living in Pompey when Mandaric came and started spending big, it would have been so easy for them to become Pompey fans with them being in the Prem and having some very good players etc, quite a buzz about the place as well at that time. Fortunately they rather liked sleeping in their bedrooms as opposed to the shed ;) They're 21 and 18 now and both have always kept the faith, thank fuck :D

Thank you my friend, you give me hope. Unfortunately my indoctrination wil probably prove fruitless. my eldest is desperate to go to Stoke. my youngest, less so, but wont want to miss out if the eldest is going. thus there mum will need to come too, her alliegance is as strong as my parenting. I promised I would save up and let them stay in. Hotel.......but even if I did that, got over the fact that my eldest gets car sick every half hour, my youngest has the attention span of a gnat, my wife has no interest in football........even if I could pull all of that together..........what chance( no chance) of 4 tickets sat together for a one off game..........= none. I love my family, I love my club, will keep on at my boys, but fear that lack of access will be a losing battle irrespective of a 9 hour round trip

Just scrolled down to the Euston thread. So , if I can't take them to a home game, maybe try getting away tickets....how depressing, how limiting and how intimidating.. Will always be Rob in Plumpton, just wish that Matthew and Jack in Plumpton will one day be on here too

Use the search function on here guys to search for posts with "green slime" I have found at least 5 posts from late 2000's which refer to Peter Coates as The Green Slime. I was beginning to thing I was going mad! Had me searching through old Oaties and everything!
