I was thinking about investing in a classic car seeing as my savings are earning naff all in the bank, does anyone have any advise?
I can't afford an Aston Martin or anything like that but I have been looking at fast fords from the 70's and 80's. A MK1 Escort RS Mexico is fetching around 30k at the moment and a MK2 RS2000 around 25k do any of you guys have one of these? MK1 Lotus Cortinas where fetching this about 10 years ago but are now going for about 55k. I swear to god that 5 or 6 years ago you could get a XR3i in the sentinel for £1500 but I have googled XR3i to death today and can't find a good 1 for less than 10k.
I look forward to any sensible advise and understand that most comments will be piss taking!

I had an Escort Mk2 Harrier that was quite quick and still a practical car, which is my advice , make sure it can cope with modern traffic conditions as sitting in a garage is not much use.
Brother has a Healey 3000 and does all his own restoration , but I'm afraid I like my modern comforts too much now.
Had a Healey Sprite and a few MGs a Z3 which imo is a coming classic but heated seats, sat nav, nice ice, climate control etc are what I look for now.

I think you'd have to keep it in a garage and dry weather use only. Old cars rust like buggery and of course will need regular maintainace. So I don't know if the ISA will beat your investment or not. The best reason to own an old vehicle is the joy of ownership, so I'd say put your brass elsewhere.

Look at all the classics today and use the same criteria for your purchase ie performance , convertible ? build quality , timeless , optimum age / value . If I had to make a choice I would look for a German top end convertible or a jag , some bargains to be had £ 5/6 k

If I wanted to spend money on a car that would go up in value, then I'd be looking at 1980s cars that haven't quite got classic status. Peugeot 205 Gti, the fast Fords from that era aren't quite in stupid money territory yet. I'd even look at Rover 825 V6 if in good nick. As ever you need to investigate parts availability, are there marque specialists nearby, and joining an owners club is essential.

As said above , I'd go for cars yet to hit the classic/iconic status 205gti GOLF GTI mk1 has already done well so the mk2 should be a decent performer too Range Rover mk1 Lancia delta hf integrale Ford Capri Saab 900t If you are prepared to wait a while the original audi tt will become valuable I reckon, was a bit of a marmite car when originally introduced and created a fair bit of press coverage.
I guarantee Land Rover series 1&2 will make you money if bought at the right price, easy to work on and people love em .
There's a woman on gravely bank who I delivered to a month ago ( up from the Lightwood tavern ) that has a 205gti she wants rid of for free as she is sick of seeing it in the drive.. Needs doing up but A good one will fetch anywhere between 5k-10k at the moment on eBay

It would be kept in a garage and would only come out on sunny summer days, I just something for fun on a weekend and hopefully be worth more than I bought it for when I sell it on in ten years time.

What about a Reliant Robin ....there's not many left and they don't rust . They used to run on 2star petrol too , that's why half the City council workmen used to have them .!

If your plan is to buy a car cheap and sell it on for a profit in a few years you have missed the boat with most 70's and 80's cars now. I bought a 22K mile Capri eight years ago for nearly £3K and its now worth between £7K and £8K. In that time I've spent around £2K on the upkeep of it however. Even though you may keep it in the garage and only do a couple of hundred miles a year, like I do, you will still have problems to rectify.
This might sound very boring now, but if I was looking for a cheap investment sort of project I would be looking at late 90's early 2000's Jap Performance stuff. You can pick the cars up now for a couple of grand and their collectibility and desirability is steadily edging in to the mainstream. I bought a Honda Accord Type'R to move the kids around in last year and looking at today's values I could probably sell it for 300-400 more than I paid for it (they will never fetch amazing money due to them being a saloon) 12 months ago. I would suggest looking at Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi etc etc

Early 90's Jap metal is on the rise, unmolested RX7's, Supras, Silvia's, GTO's and RB5 Impreza's are rarer than the proverbial excrement from a horse of the rocking variety, if you can find one in decent nick for a decent price that's where I'd stick my money.

I genuinely haven't seen one on the road for more than 4 years, and when I have it's either been treated like an unwanted child or full on race-spec.
