Shit bin if posted before
Was any posters off here on the Virgin 7.30 from London last night, the players’ Coach pulled on to the platform at Euston and they were shepherded on to the first First class carriage on the train, some seemed to enjoy the experience of the fans attention smiling and waving (Crouch)where as some seemed very uncomfortable and embarrassed with it all and just wanted to get on the train.
Once on the train many kids tried to get in to the carriage but were turned back being refused entry to the players, ( I cant be sure every one of the kids on the train were turned away but I know every kid in our carriage was turned away)when the train pulled in to Stoke the players were again shepherded off the train and then over the little bridge at the far end of the station and in to the first class Lounge, the only players to walk down the platform mingling with the fans were Steven N'Zonzi and Ryan Shawcross and out of the two the only player to pose for photos, sign autographs and greet the fans being Steven N'Zonzi, he spent a minute or two on the platform, under the tunnel and in the concourse area and looked to be really appreciating the adulation that he was receiving never once complaining and was smiling ear to ear, now I know they have just played a game of footy and endured a 1hr 20 min journey in first class but surely they could have appeased the little kids (and the 48 year old kids) by mixing with the fans for 2 mins, once outside the station N'Zonzi again signed shirts and posed for pictures and after a minute or two was allowed to continue his journey with his name being chanted by all on the concourse as he got on to the waiting coach which was parked to the left of the entrance…… which for some reason is the furthest away from the first class lounge.
As we got out of the station we turned right to head to Stoke town so we had to walk past the first class lounge and the players were standing outside waving and whistling to the coach to reverse down and pick them up, if I am being honest they looked absolutely petrified to be out in the street with a 100 or so fans in between them and the coach, Charlie Adam actually sprinted up the middle of the road completely avoiding the fans, Arnie & I think it was Stephen Ireland although I could be wrong with Ireland crossed over the road by the Subway sandwich shop and went the longest route again to avoid the fans, Glenn Whelan put his head down as if he was really shy and just nodded as people congratulated him and walked up to the coach with only Marc Muniesa and Johnny Walters shaking hands and acknowledging the fans, it was all a little bizarre because I did not recognise many of them so close up and so close together walking up the road so quickly, again I cannot say what happened and who may have mixed once up with the main crowd outside the main entrance.
I may be old fashioned and I am sure it pisses them off when it happens but is it really too much trouble or too scary to sign a few autographs and pose for a few pictures no matter how ugly the fan who requests it may be, especially considering every one on that train had probably spent the best part of a £100 to journey to London and watch them play, well done to the few that provided the experience of mixing with the common and garden fan.

Good post, well worth the effort to read. Completely agree with your sentiments. Perhaps the most famous player Stoke produced, Stan, used to travel to home matches on the bus. As a lad we used to go on holiday to Blackpool, very often bumped into him and he always had time to speak to fellow Stokies. Different world.

If ever I went in the butler St stand or paddock early 70s sir Stan stood in the queue and paid to get in , very quiet and unassuming he was , always chatted as he waited . I was a bit to young and apprehensive to speak to him though

Fair play to him , had a good game too, I was on that train and thought it was a great laugh when they were forced to brush past the fans , sad how they are treated the way that they are pathetic when you think about it .

Its a sad reflection of how footballers have become detached from the fanbase, I always find it a bit creepy when you see photos of the players pre-game at home behind mesh fencing to keep adoring young kids a safe distance away, not blaming the players they all seem happy to pose for photos etc but it can't be right that they have to be behind a fence.
Its no wonder some players go off the rails when they have to go out in public, a lot of them have never been allowed to mix with real people and can't cope with normality

The two times I have seen Stoke (I know pathetic) Wilson has gone out of his way to accommodate the fans along with Bojan, Crouchie, and Huth. In REIT im Winkl CharlienAdam came out of the dugout to take a photo. I think these guys have their good days and bad you know? Sometimes they have time for the fans other times ....

(sets himself up for a public rebuking but takes a deep breath…)
Basically, suppporters are equally as culpable as players with regards to this issue. We live in a 24 hour, round the clock media society where people blog, criticise and harrangue players online to their hearts content. There was a bloke on twitter who wrote a fairly lengthy and vitriolic blog about SCFC on Saturday, when he clearly wasn't at the game (not the first time, apparently) - why? You weren't fucking there? Your frame of reference was a dodgy feed from Al-Jazeera, and on this basis you write a stinging rebuke? Fuck off.
I don't know any Stoke players, but I do know some (mostly ex now) players, and they used to check the messageboards constantly either to feed their ego's (which are considerable and required, given their profession) or to indulge in some macabre ritual when a team's support had turned against them. I can guarantee that most of the Stoke players will go on here from time to time. What do they get? Half arsed fucking opinions from people who haven't been to the game, or a general slagging for having the audacity to be picked to play ahead of X or Y. I know this, 'cos I have done a bit of it myself.
Players should make the effort for kids. It's important to be role models and it's great to hear of players that do that, but for the gurning 40-odd years olds who paint their beards? Not for me. I love football and my club in particular, but this group aren't my role models, they're employees. I share my own ill-informed opinions of them on here when the mood takes but I don't get upset or ask them to sign my pants if I see them in the street. There's an age where that should be inconsequential and it passed for me over 20 years ago….

I'm 25 and enjoy meeting the players I agree with pretty much everything you said from start to finish but I do think it is nice just to treat your fans like people not the plague but I've never been famous so I couldn't imagine how annoying it is being hounded 24/7 and so closely scrutinized.

To return to the original post, I'm pleased N'Zonzi is demonstrating social/fan awareness and appears happy.
I just hope he signs a new contract and steps up another level next season playing with Bojan and hopefully a few more class players MH brings in.

My Dad was telling me a story about how the players in the early 70's used to stop on the way back from games and have a drink with the fans in a pub in Church Lawton. They may have been less inclined to had they had the facility to check on their phones to see everyone calling them useless twats every time they lost (again, me included. no finger pointing). I just think it's the way it is. I grew up in a village where the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, lived (and still does). Remember him saying once that if he walked in and bought a round, everyone called in a flash prick, if he just bought his own he'd be called a tight prick. he couldn't win so he stopped trying. There might just be an element fo this at play.

to be fair, pretty much all of the players (and management staff including TP and Reidy) used to be more than happy to chat, have photos taken etc. after training (apart from Kitson who was a right mardarse and would go out of his way to ignore people!) but straight after a game when they just want to get home i can see why they don't want to. especially given the fact that instead of it being just a handful of people accosting them at 1pm after light training, it's 100 pissed up Stokies who've been downing ales since 10.30am accosting them after playing a match they're probably gutted about not winning.
as VP says, many players will read thread after thread on here with "Fans" slagging them off to the hilt and saying how shit they are and need to be sold etc. etc. so why the hell should they have any kind of obligation to pose for photos with people when they're literally only just finished a game and they're knackered and just want to get home to their families?
their job is to perform on the pitch and if they do so in a professional manner then it's THAT that makes them role models for kids NOT having a chat and signing autographs for 100 odd pissed up dickheads (where there also happen to be a handful of kids hanging around as well) that spend most of their time on here abusing them. they act as role models when they're on the clock as it were...once they'e clocked off they have no obligation to any fan and i think that's fair really.

A couple of things to recognise
1) The attention, money and fame players get thesedays means this kind of personal attention is inevitable - they just have to share it our amongst themselves rather than, be shut away and insulated.
2) As Far as Steven Nzonzi is concerned - the more recent positive stuff and the fact that he's now a family man means, hes finally growing up and at the same time becoming another indespensible part of our clubs future to boot.
long may this continue

The players must be pissed off by people stalking them all the time and wanting autographs. Leave them alone I say! Bloody hell this is an old thread but here goes..... Stalking them..........they were on the same fucking train, the little kids could get nowhere near them on the train to sign their programes (not the players fault I know as security were on the doors) but they got off at Stoke on the same platform at the same time as the fans, hardly stalking them, I agree there has to be a balance for their own privacy and such but the fans were not exactly standing outside their house peeking through windows, 75% of the fans just walked away but the ones that wanted to get a little closer than they usually do did not get a chance, other than SN'Z Its not asking much is it to pose for a few photos and sign their name for people who spend a lot of money following their heroes in red and white........ let’s see how eager they are when they reach 35-37 years old to still want to be hero worshiped, they will want the biggest audience they can find to tell anyone that listens that they used to be a pro......after dinner speaking, media work etc.
